Nokia Predicts 3 Billion Mobile Users By 2010

By The Associated Press

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) - The number of people worldwide using mobile phones will likely reach 3 billion by 2010, a Nokia Corp. executive said Thursday.

Currently, the Helsinki-based cell phone maker, the world's largest in terms of market share, said about 2 billion people have the phones.

Wali Moneimne, Nokia's senior vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa, didn't say how the rise would affect the company's results, but he said that currently the company "owns one-third of the global mobile phone market."

Amazing that a large proportion of mobile phone users is in Africa. When the poorest of the poor use expensive communication equipment, it is really an indictment against fixed-line operators (monopolies) shady business practices and lack of investment in infrastructure.

Not Telkom per se. We need competition in fixed line industry as to get better and faster data services. The world is moving beyond analogue and mobile operators cannot provide the solid and high speed service we can get from fixed lines...

We don't need Telkom. We need efficient telcos!

:D

I hate Telkom. It is a dinosaur company that diserves to be broken up into new companies with new people managing them with fresh ideas and loads and loads of competition to drive their talents! The current lot in Telkom's managment should be religated to the slums of business whatever that may be... They should not be allowed to manage. They must be forced to WORK for a living so that they can understand what it feels like to be the person who suffers most from their greed! The same must happen to the MoC and some officials at Icasa.
