SA already ranks 48 out of 142 countries in connectitivity, according to the World Bank
compared to?
The hand-cranked computers can be used by millions of schoolchildren around the globe to gain easy access to education and research.

About the size of a textbook, the lime-green machines can set up their own wireless networks and operate in areas without a reliable electricity supply.
oh dear, Ivy might have to change legislation.....

to ensure that all areas have easy access to information and communication technology by 2015 as agreed in Geneva two years ago

2015?

I love the way politicians plan so far ahead when they're perfectly aware that it won't be their problem at that point in time.

By then Ivy will probably be the Minister of NothingInParticular and any promises will long since have been forgotten.

I believe that probably originally said, "SA has dropped to number 48 out of 142 in connectivity and still slipping", but SABC (mouthpiece of the ANC) probably changed the wording to give it a different 'spin' (capitalising at the same time on the extremely low 'country self-esteem' of South Africans, who will mostly probably react "wow that's great"). Yet IIRC we used to rank around number 30 or so, just five or ten years ago.

A country that ranks 27th in terms of nominal GDP should certainly be doing better than 48th in connectivity ranking - that's a little disturbing :(

Where does the figure 142 come from though? There are about 200 countries ... which were left out, I wonder?

Fantastic!!!! The government invested a cost of a house in Johannesburg in ITC.
This will save the nation.

Indeed, and just to add a little additional perspective, Telkom clears over $500,000 nett profit every 3.5 hours!
