Role Definition

Realworld Performance Lab (RPL) is an S1 Payments initiative to simulate a large production system in a laboratory environment with the aim of identifying usability, quality, scalability and performance issues.

The RPL DBA is responsible for supporting the databases that the S1 Payments suite of products (developed in-house) uses that is deployed on the RPL system. This support involves:

· The RPL DBA has to perform detailed analysis of issues that appear to be database related. This analysis will require the RPL DBA to use tools such as SQL profiling tools, Windows Performance Monitor and other utilities provided by the database engine to assist in the troubleshooting process. If an issue requires input from one of the development teams the analysis has to be documented in detail. The RPL DBA might be required to explain the issue verbally to the development team involved.

· The RPL DBA has to do continuous bottom-up analysis (from a database perspective) of the S1 Payments suite of products to identify inefficient/incorrect queries, potential bottlenecks and inefficient database design and to recommend solutions to these problems.

· The RPL DBA has to ensure that the databases are properly maintained to ensure optimal performance and availability of the S1 Payments suite of products.

The RPL DBA has to package all recommendations, lessons learnt and utilities developed for distribution to the wider organization, including Product Engineering and the regional teams. The RPL DBA should also strive to automate as much of these support tasks as possible.

The RPL DBA is also required to perform detailed analysis of issues on client systems that appear to be database related. Although this is not the RPL DBA’s primary task it might be required on an ad-hoc basis.

The RPL DBA has to be involved in discussions with the development teams if new products/features require extensive database changes/design. The RPL DBA should also be available in an advisory capacity if advice regarding database design, inefficient queries, etc. is required.

The RPL DBA has to provide mentorship to other team members by exposing them to the DBA environment and ensuring that skills transfer takes place.

The RPL DBA is responsible for testing and promoting changes (non-database related) to the RPL production environment. Each change has to be documented in detail, tested (regression, unit and performance testing) and applied in the RPL QA/pre-production environment before being promoted to the RPL production environment. The RPL DBA will be responsible for reviewing changes from other team members and should also ensure that the formal change control process is adhered to.

The RPL DBA has to be involved in planning sessions to discuss the roadmap for the RPL system. The RPL DBA might also be required to perform basic project management tasks, including but not limited to:

· Estimating tasks and tracking each task’s progress.

· Ensuring that the team follows the project management methodology being used.
