Telkom Internet finally informs customers of 1st of November changes. 23 Days late!

Telkom Internet has finally sent out a notice to all its customers informing them of the 1st of November hard caps and other changes. This was done in an email originating from [email protected] with the subject "TelkomInternet New DSL Capping Policy"

The new policy was spelled out in an image file containing the text of the message attatched to the email...

The message arrived in the early hours of Wednesday the 23rd of November 2005 just after 2 AM.

23 Days late!

It has to be pointed out that the www.telkomsa.net website was however updated in recent days with the said information but ordinary users not actively aware of this would not have bothered to look for it, as this information was not spelled out in corporate communication with customers up until now.

how does this tie back to their contract with us? is there anything specific in the contractthat says they have to notify usin any specific way or is it what i fear that they "reserve the right to change the service without notice"
In which case it shouldn't be called a contract but something else and should come with a tube of KY Jelly as standard

How on earth is this an improvement - more like another case of talkom misleading anybody who does not understand the impact of hard capping.

I still don't realise how they are even ALLOWED to do this. Can't the USA come and save South Africa from itself...anybody!!

Are they the only ISP with a large enough subscriber base to manage this? Of the capping systems currently in use this one would seem to be the less crap one. It explains the reason why some people are reportedly using high amounts (like 80gb in one case) and not getting capped.

Mzala,

If you are in the 3Gb pool, you wont get capped unless
- you have exceeded 3gb AND
- the average usage of ALL the subscribers to this package has reach a certain level probably somewhere close to 3gb (to enable telkom to make sure the average does not go over 3gb.)

It seems, when I read the notice, it is hardcapping that telkom is talking about. Though I really dont know how the usage pool thing fit in.

So the reason why everyone has been able to go ape **** and download 80-odd gigs is that the user average hasn't yet pipped 4gb or whatever?

Let's put this into layman's terms:

As one of our subscribers, you will find that the first improvement has been the removal of the soft cap.

translates to:

As one of the souls we own, you will find that we've removed the KY and gone right ahead and requisitioned the spikey steel dildo.

How can the removal of the soft cap be a good thing for the love of it?! Telkom spinners really should have worked for Hitler. They would have had the world hailing him as a saviour and telling the Allies to go home!

I also got this notice this morning:

But it appears to me that they contradict themselves - in the same paragraph...

...hard capping will not be enforced...

...all services exceeding the product capping limits will be capped.

So which is it then????

Gripe 2:
What the hell is it with companies using image files in their emails? My mail client blocks them by default - and its such a pain unblocking the image. And there isn't even any "alternate" text for people who can't see the images and are using text based mail clients or screen readers!!!

Gripe 3:
So the way i understand it - the capping size that you bought means f-all. Its just an arbatory number - and then you get lumped with a whole bunch of other arbatory users. And then when telkom decides that they need to start improving their profit margins they can just cut you off at an arbatory cap (that i'm sure we'll never get exact details of) because you're somewhere above your arbatory limit....

hehehe, the USA company that controlled Telkom was probably the start of all our troubles in the first place! they just milked us and buggered off.
US = sneaky.

They knew about Telkom's protective monopoly and screwed us anyway. Careful what you wish

Methinks they do something to this effect:

Assume there are 1000 customers on 3gig bit cap accounts.

Total bandwidth allowance per month for the group is thus 3000gigs

That gives a total group allowance of 100gigs per day.

Some people use more than their alotted 100meg per day others less. As long as the total is close to 100gigs per day nobody is capped.

If less than 100gigs were used yesterday the amount of play may change for the next day of the month perhaps allowing a total day cap of 140gigs for instance if only 60gigs were used the day before.

If it were more than 100gigs the previous day it might be lowered to the average for the remaining monthly cap vs the days left in the month.

Nobody who haven't used more then their individually assaigned bit cap will be capped anywhere during this process but those who go over put themselves at risk of being capped. What constitutes excessive use is a mystery because I know there are people pushing their downloads to the max!

I doubt other ISP's have this luxury...

I doubt they're willing to take the risk. The ISPs who formerly offered their customers the high end accounts probably still have a higher than average ratio of high end users. This model that telkom is using would sink them.

Besides. If telkomInternet screws up with the calculations and has to buy more bandwidth who are they buying it from? Themselves!

I'm going to put my flame retardant suit on now and go out on a limb - to me this might just end up being the best deal available ATM out of all the SAIX offerings. I almost puked saying it but I believe its true.

Please dont misunderstand - IMO its still a rip off having to pay so much in the first place and Telkom is still the epitome of evil!

If Telkom Internet continues not to cap at the bit cap indicators then yes. It is a better deal. But unfair to other ISP's...

I agree, the cost is still too high though! Far too high...
