Article: SA rail needs R97 billion investment

so that's... what?.... R5 billion to build the actual network and R92 billion into the pockets of the "connected" parties? :D

Anyway...
Funding for the project will come from a partnership with private sector manufacturers and financiers, as the state is unable to fund "such a large programme" from its coffers.

Relax. This is an investment opportunity for those with the money
 
Wasn't China going to come and build there high speed railroad for us?
 
hahahahaha I would bet my nuts that in 5 years from now the railway system will be exactly the same.
 
Wonder what they actually use the Ticket fares for? Amazing how these things just work in Europe, the States etc. Here in SA the only thing that works is the lining of pockets if you are well enough connected.

To make it worse, people just take it and say nothing. No wonder it just continues.

Just like what happened with Eksdom, they are going to make us pay for it.

Their ingenuity in screwing us knows no bounds.

Rolling stocks...mean just that -an upgrade and replacement of current ageing rail coaches, locomotives, etc. The fast speed rail project is another story altogether. A feasibilty study has not even been concluded for that one.

What about feeder networks, such as buses? Are we meant to drive to a train station and park our cars there all day?

I really don't see us ever having a rail network comparable to most first world countries because of a combination of our geography and demographics. We don't have large numbers of people concentrated in relatively small and specific areas - instead it is more widely distributed. We'll only see the benefits of a good rail network when we start running out of land and are forced to start building upwards, IMO.

No feeder networks.
The roads are in too bad a condition.
But i bet some BEE entrepeneur is already working on "improving" our roads...,.

It's only an investment if it generates a return for you.

The rail network is old and the rolling stock is really ancient. I don't blame the current gov. for that but I would like to blame them in advance for the R97bil they are going to squander.
