Article: Australia unveils tough new cigarette pack rules

I fail to see why so many South Africans emigrate to a country that restricts so much of their life...

How is this restricting anything? Perhaps they should remove the warnings. That is restricting the writing space i have on the back dammit!!!!!

Yeah one would think Somalia would be better. No pesky restrictions and regulations there

The world's toughest laws on tobacco promotion moved a step closer Thursday with Australia saying all cigarette packets will soon have to be dark olive-green and plastered with health warnings.
What are these idiots smoking that makes them think this will really discourage anyone from smoking tobacco? All it can do is make it harder to pick up the right pack from the shelf.

Heritage Index of Economic Freedom
http://www.heritage.org/index/ranking

Austalia - Rank = 3rd most free, total points 82.5
South Africa - Rank = 74th most free, total points 62.7
Doesn't really mean much does it?

Great Now how would i figure out which one is blue label and which one is the red label ?

Doesn't really mean much does it?

It depends on your definition of freedom. He is correct in saying this a move which seeks to prohibit or question human choice, on the on hand Australia by almost every single measure (However arbitrary) is regarded as more free than South Africa.

So the argument they should stay here if they desire freedom, is wrong.

Doesn't really mean much does it?

Correct it is an index, it is subjective. However not having any meaning? If the logical principle behind what = more or less freedom is sound then the "relative" scores prove "relative" freedom and demonstrate SA is less free than Aus. The scoring difference is abritrary (As the weighting is arbitrary and why give some 1-10 and not 1-20) but more or less free is a qualitative claim that can be made and deomnstrated.

Thus the index does have meaning.

LOL because making it green is going to make such a massive difference.

"Wow I never realised how nasty cigarettes were before. Now that the box is green I realise the error of my ways. Oh woe is me!"

Seriously what is this insane rule hoping to achieve?

Are you insane dude, that is like removing the bull out of the redbull can.

It is massive to remove company logo's. It defines the brands image. Do you think they pour millions into their logo's and designs because they got money to waste?

Believe it or not attractive looking boxes attract the eye of a young smoker and could very well lead to the brand that person decides to go with. It's a major blow in my opinion in terms of selling your product.

It isn't why people get hooked in the first place though. They smoke because their friends do and it is cool. Peer pressure and societal pressure.

Nope but it is one more blow to cigi's companies around the world. Slowly that generation of cool smokers will die out.

The next trick is get smoking banned in movies.

Artist freedom? What is artist about showing people smoking in movies?
Who are you to say what does and does not constitute art?

There have been countless movies in which smoking is used to reinforce attributes of characters. The societal attitude towards smoking and the circumstance in which the smoking is occurring vary and this is used in film to create impressions about characters. One of the ones I'm sure we can all relate to is the stereotypical tough guy smoking his cigar.

You talk about why people start smoking and then ask me about artist freedom? Movies make it cool bud. Everyone watches movies so if you want the coolness factor out the way remove it from movies.
You can argue all you want you are attempting to undermine artistic freedom. For example war kills people too but that doesn't mean we should stop making films about it. Murder is nasty as well that doesn't mean we should stop making films about it.

Every single time I discuss this with you your attitude is to try to manipulate people through any means available to stop them from smoking. Even if it means stamping on freedoms and censoring our artistic expression to do it. I disagree with you. Worse still you want this so that it can help you personally to stay away from ciggies. Bah.
