Malema: Vote for ANC to keep Mandela alive

Johannesburg - ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema invoked former president Nelson Mandela's name in a speech urging his supporters to vote for the ruling party in upcoming local government elections, The Star newspaper reported on Thursday.

"When you put a cross, there are two things you must see. The first line of the cross you must say 'happy birthday' Walter Sisulu; the second cross you must say 'get well Madiba', because you are doing it for the ANC," Malema said in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday.

"President Mandela is sick and you don't want to contribute to a worsening condition of Mandela by not voting ANC. President Mandela will never endure if the ANC is out of power," the youth leader said, according to a quote published in The Star.

Local government elections will take place on May 18, which is also the late Sisulu's birth date.

Mandela, 92, was discharged from hospital in February after being treated for a respiratory infection. He was later moved to his home in Houghton where he is under 24-hour supervision by a medical team.

He retired from politics in June 1999 and from public life in 2004.

His ex-wife, politician Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, complained in an interview last year published in the London Evening Standard that the ANC "kept him as a figurehead for the sake of appearance" and that Mandela was "wheeled out globally to collect the money".

Madikizela-Mandela denied ever doing the interview, but the UK paper stood by its story.

Yep, that's why he said that the first cross is for Walter's birthday.

It's actually quite sad that voting is no longer about service delivery to improve your quality of life, but about emotion. I'm beginning to wonder whether some people even know why they're voting.

Like Tokyo is not a capitalist only a rich communist. :)
He, Malema, is not rich because his mother was poor. :)

Eish, that woodwork score made him a failure in life. He should be an assistant gardener at most!
 
They're REALLY scraping the barrel this time. I'd kill myself out of embarrassment if I was a young black person.

LOL from the comments by some black people on the timeslive it seems they are very proud of what malema said.

An example:

Thank you President Malema for this wonderful address in our EC! This support for the farther of our country brings tears to my eyes! I fully support this notion that we need to do whatever it takes to help former President Mandela to recover and to ensure that his legacy lives on forever in this country.

We need to protect it from evil outside influences from failing "opposition" banana parties who's only aim is to bring this country back to the colonial state of opression which it was dampled in before 1994

Unfortunately it does not matter what your credentials are anymore..just how much money you have and the influence you can wield.

As I said, some idiots vote out of emotion, not out of common sense. Politicians around the world have been exploiting this for ages.
