Taxi fares to increase - Industry wants to be Subsidised!

The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) on Sunday again called on government to subsidise the industry, so they can provide a cheaper service to consumers and absorb increases more effectively.

The council said the recent petrol price hike has a lot to do with its own fare increases at the beginning of May. The petrol price increased by 54 cents and diesel by 70 cents a litre last week.

Santaco’s Mvuyise Mente said, “The commuter that actually supports the taxi industry is not being subsidised but the commuter that is using a bus as well as the train is being subsidised.”

The government doesn't want to subsidise the taxi industry because they don't want to be accused of running those death traps! :D
 
If you think about it, increased taxi fees can increase inflation. Most of this country's workers rely on taxis, if those prices go up, their wages will follow, meaning the final goods price will increase. Subsidising them is not a bad idea, but that could be just another drain in our tax revenue..

Damn oil price :(

And I rely on my car as we have no reliable nor accessible public transport .. yet I see no subsidy for me forthcoming. Fcking freeloader mentality.

Errm how much money do you earn a month? Do you live in a shack? You sound like one of those people who has a car, house, earns a decent salary but thinks people who struggle are just free loaders.

Enough with the guilt trip already, as a taxpayer I already part with a considerable amount for those that struggle. My comment was directed towards the logic of 'most of this country's workers rely on taxis' - we'll I'm a worker too & the government's doing its utmost to make it even more expensive for me to get to work. Where's my subsidy?

I read what you wrote but they way you stated it implies that a subsidy from tax would not be inflationary. Unless there is tax surplus that we're unaware of.

Short of it is that the government needs Rx to build a hospital. If they give some of the treasury to taxi drivers they will need to get that back from tax payers so they have Rx for the hospital. Taxes going up will hit you on payday, at the till and at the petrol pump (depending on how the government goes about getting the money back). You have less disposable income so you ask for a raise. The boss give you a raise and ups the price of bread (or whatever it is that your boss produces). This is inflation.
 
Well I think the first step in getting a subsidy is to actually start paying tax on your earnings (the one thing that taxi bosses do not do)
 
It may not be such a bad idea, as long as the subsidy comes as part of an agreement that these thugs no longer operate within their own law, by forcing them to operate within rules set out by an independent regulatory body. At least then they can be held accountable, and will be made liable to pay tax.

The government doesn't make money - it is not a for profit organisation. The books are supposed to balance so if they divert funds raised from fuel into funding taxi drivers they get it back elsewhere.

More than 75% of the money to be used for subsidising the taxi industry would be stolen by some greedy and corrupt c**t in government no doubt, so I'm totally against this idea.

That and the fact that most taxi owners evade tax, why don't they use the money they save from not paying taxes to "subsidise" themselves? It's enough that we are the ones paying for the roads and to keep them in a decent state, while these guys use the road like 20 times more than us and don't pay a cent towards its maintenance.

The fuel levy covers that. What they're evading is income tax.

How does one become so stupid.
 
Taxi or taxi commuter subsidy will fortunately never happen.
The government coffers will never be able to support it.

While I sympathise with the poor and am glad I'm not in their shoes I also think it's unfair to expect those that do earn a decent salary to be dragged down financially by those who have no comprehension of birth control.
Why must other people's poor choices in life (and many times a lazy attitude) make me work myself to death just to support them?
They're not my offspring and I didn't tell them to breed like rabbits so why must I bust my ass to support all of them?
I'm sick of the typical African "you owe us" mentality.
