The British-based representative of the Libyan opposition leadership, Guma al-Gamaty, said it would look carefully at the AU plan, but would not accept any deal designed to keep Gaddafi or his sons in place, Britain's BBC reported.

Libyan officials have repeatedly said Gaddafi will not quit.

Asked if he feared rebels might reject the plan, Lamamra said: "We believe what we have proposed is broad enough to launch negotiations ... What we need is for them to accept that we are people of good will."

"It's not up to any outside force even the African Union itself to decide on the behalf of the Libyan people on who the leader of the country should be," Lamamra told a news conference in the early hours of Monday morning after the AU talks.

Zuma met Gaddafi for several hours at the Libyan leader's Bab al-Aziziyah compound with four other African heads of state.

"The brother leader delegation has accepted the roadmap as presented by us. We have to give ceasefire a chance," Zuma said, adding that the African delegation would now travel to the eastern city of Benghazi for talks with anti-Gaddafi rebels.

Somehow I dont think they should stop pounding his (gaddafi) forces. He only agreed to this since there is no way out for him - and by leaving his forces in tact is allowing him to negotiate from a position of power. Much like Mugabe setup his cosy power sharing deal.

besides most of the "brothers" are in his pocket
 
They should stop... after there is nothing left to bomb and he's surrendered. Or died.

Totally agree.

The ANC method is complete fail.
 
NATO are there simply to protect civilians.

Although the rebels might be forgiven for thinking otherwise :o

The deputy commander of NATO forces in Libya acknowledged Friday that the alliance struck rebel tanks outside the eastern oil town of Brega a day earlier but blamed the deadly incident on a lack of communication from the rebels.

Rear Adm. Russell Harding said "it would appear that two of our strikes yesterday may have resulted in the deaths of a number of TNC forces," referring to the Transitional National Council, the rebels' de facto government. Doctors said that at least five people were killed in the Thursday morning strike, the second friendly fire incident in less than a week involving NATO forces and the rebels battling Libyan strongman Muammar Gadhafi.

"I'm not apologizing," Harding told reporters in Naples, Italy. "The situation on the ground was extremely fluid and remains extremely fluid. And up until yesterday we had no information that the TNC or the opposition forces were using tanks."

If by mediation you mean "protecting private financial interests", him or his supporters are involved in ... then absolutely.

even if they continue pounding uncle gadhafi .......he is not going anywhere ..... not any time soon .... the only solution is to pound him till all the dust in tripoli sattles and there is nothing left .....

i was thinking around the idea on commandos flooding the city.
 
Seriously, the words "How Hard Can It Be?" come to mind. NATO has thousands (probably millions) of highly trained soldiers, elite commandos and the most deadly, most advanced military hardware ever created by the human race.

Gaddafi has some old Soviet tanks, a few guns sold to him by the ANC, and a couple of tents and goats. Either take him out or GTFO. This is getting as silly as Iraq.

This would be the third ceasefire then?

And how did Zumatello get there? Am I missing something about what 'no fly' zone means?

No can do...UN resolution does not allow for them to go after him directly, nor the use of ground forces. Only thing they can do is remotely bombard his army (where there's a threat to civilians...little grey here)

There are certainly special forces on the ground in Libya
 
That was a waste of tax payers' money.

The Star had a picture of Gadaffy Duck posing with his favourite ninja turtle while dressed in a curtain that he must have ripped out of a seedier brothel.

So Zuma goes all the way to Libya, doesn't bother to meet with the rebels and congratulates himself on the fact that the "mission had been a huge success". Hours later the "agreement" collapses ... and now he'll probably act all suprised and shrt :erm:

Honestly ...:(
