Golf 5 2.0 FSI or 2.0 TDI which one?????

Im looking at buying one of these 2 models.

I know the pros and cons about petrol and diesels and iv done a lot of research.

I need a car for my new job as Il be travelling about 900km a week.

Im looking at the Golfs as I already have a GTI DSG which the wife has claimed as her own. So my Corsa Utility 1.8 sport will have to say goodbye.

Iv seen a few good models around, now I just cant decide. TDI or FSi (petrol)

Has anyone ever had problems with the TDI's turbo?

Im looking between R140000-R170000 with not more than 80000km although I know the 90000km service and new cambelt is expensive.

Can anyone offer some advice on which to choose?
 
I drive a Tdi and love it! Huge fuel saver. If you going to be doing long distance, you are going to get awesome mileage on a diesel.

Haven't had a problem with my turbo, but planning on getting a new car soon while the going is good. If the turbo goes you are in the poo.

It all really depends on how the previous owner treated the car. Problem is people don't know how to treat turbo'd cars. Seriously.

I had to tell a colleague that you should let the car idle for a few minutes when you have been hammering it. He had no clue. I don't foresee his turbo lasting to long.

I have the 1.9 TDi & was told by more than one source this is no longer neccesary with newer turbo's.

It isn't strictly, but it won't do any harm and it will extend the turbo's life.

It's all relative, though. My folks stay just off the N1 so after a long-distance trip we'd always let the car catch its breath before switching off. On the flip-side if you're in the suburbs and spend the last 5km of your journey pottering along it wouldn't have any additional benefit.

Well who gets more money if the Turbo goes? if you read up why they say you should do it then it makes perfect sense to keep doing it.
 
Turbos blow because they take longer to spin down and by switching off the engine you cut the oil to the turbo, hence why the bearings seize up.

New or old, you should definitely let the car idle for a few minutes after driving, especially if you drive it hard.

I'm surprised you didn't say that they are colluding with the petrochemical companies to increase fuel sales. I know exactly why you need to do it. I just pointed out that the instructions are right in front of you - it's your own fault if the turbo fails due to negligence.
 
I was in the same space about 3 months ago, love the golf 5 TDI and FSI, one of my friends suggested I take a test drive in a new polo and then decide if I would still want and second hand golf 5. Well I did the test drive and bought myself a polo the next day. Yes the power is more but nothing compares to a new car.

id go with the 5
ive driven both and the 5 just feels like so much more car and solid
 
I already have a 5 gti, and its brilliant, I know there are lemons out there and its a bit of a gamble. But I will be taking an extended warranty. B class cars are just a bit too feminine in my opinion. Plus, when I cruise to the coast I want packing space and power to pull my bikes on the trailer.
 
Have you maybe considered another brand? I have seen some pretty good deals on CDTi's lately.
 
It was just a question, nothing more. Glad he got a car in the end and I am sure he will have great fun driving it and finding it in parking lots.
 
Ok, got the 2.0 tdi, I made it 60km from the dealer and all of a sudden I lose power, limped it to the Shell, luckily 1km down the road.

Its now back at the dealer getting a new turbo. Gotta love the new CPA. have a Polo tdi as a courtesy car.
