Setup an email account on blackberry without BIS service

Hi guys I just bought I bb 9700 I put in my mtn contract sim and it works great the Internet connects works smoothly only thing is I can't setup an email account called the mtn sp and they say I have to get bis
But I don't want bis because I'm getting 300mb to use ever month
 
Only way I managed to do this was by downloading the GMail client and running that.
