Selling a vehicle - advice for online advertising

Hi all,

Have to sell my precious C55 AMG, and want to ask some advice on how to advertise it effectively online. I have loaded ads with Autotrader and Carfind, who else would you recommend? I heard many bad things about gumtree, and don't want to risk safety and security.

The calls I have had so far with Autotrader and Carfind are legit and people are interested, but I want to cast the net as far out as I can.

Would it be worth posting an ad on myADSL?

Hey man, that is great news!!!! Congrats :)

Jeez I wish man, that is a seriously awesome car, even though I am looking, its a bit outta my price range.
 
Gumtree is the best. Not sure why you would have heard bad things about it? I've sold a few cars and motorbikes through the Gumtree without any hassles. It's no more or less safe than any other advertising medium and I'm pretty sure they have a much bigger audience than either Autotrader or Carfinder.

sold my beemer from there last year
you can usually pick out the scammers and time wasters
just use common sense and youll be fine

Gumtree is fine for anything EXCEPT electronics. That's scam central.
 
I just sold my car on Gumtree and I had only 1 or 2 phone calls that I thought were illegitimate. All others were serious, it took a bit of time but I sold it without any bad luck.
 
Thanks guys I will try Gumtree out. Just out of interest sake, what does one do in terms of arranging finance? I have a second vehicle (for which I already have a buyer) but getting finance for a private sale seems more of an ordeal than I thought! He got approved by MFC today but they want a whopping R8,000 as a "commission" and another R3,500 for license and registration. He told them to get lost. The ABSA's and FNB's seem reluctant to help him...I cannot say why.

Any ideas who to approach that would do a deal for a reasonable fee?

Private finance is an absolute nightmare. Now that I sold mine (luckily it was a cash transaction) I am buying a new car privately and so far the application has taken 2 weeks. It retrospect, it could have been done faster, but Nedbank said they need x, y and z and so I gave it to them - only to chase them and 3 days later find out x is wrong. Correct that and suddenly I need a whole lot more documentation.

The whole process could be a heck of a lot smoother and make everyone else a bit happier.
 
I advertised my car on gumtree. I had my email addy on the ad and got about 3 very starnge emails that i ignored. The people who phoned me were all legit. Here is one email I saved.

"Thanks for the details information about your car. It seem you are a sincere Person. I want to inform you that I will buy your car at your given price.

I am Capt. Capt John Osgood i am right now in Afghanistan I think I need more picture and more details about the car for my inspection. I can be reach on this ID: [email protected]

Yea Gumtree works. Just don't be stupid and be aware... I've sold a car or two on Gumtree and it is really fast, free and easy... Meet in a public place, etc. etc.
 
Yep, I also sold a car on Gumtree. Took a couple of hours to get a solid buyer. Best way to do it is to wait till you have a cash buyer. I was lucky to get one straight away.
If someone has to get finance you're going to have to wait for a week or two for paperwork and bank approvals. Plus there's additional costs that will need to be covered if it is a private to private deal.

I bought my current car privately on Gumtree as well. Needed finance so had to do the deal through an ABSA approved dealership which cost me another R7k or so extra.
