Does anyone know what protocol MXIT uses for their own protocol to send messages from cellphone to cellphone.
or anything technically related to the operation of MXIT??

Hi Guys
MXIT uses their own protocol (or say they say) this belongs to them AFAIK. Read it on their website.
No MXIT ain't closing (rumours been circulating since their inception), nor have they received any lawsuits.
Hope this clears everything up.

yes, they are not closing, how the hell can the networks stop a internet data related service...

@assassin
Aren't they using jabber or something based on it?
I can chat to any mxit user through gaim using my jabber account.
Can one not just go to www.mxit.co.za/wap/ and download an applet and inspect it?

I think they use something very simmilar to the Jabber protocol. Mxit (server) quite happily connects to other Jabber servers, and you can see/talk to people with a normal Jabber client with ease. I tried decompiling one of the applets (to see if I could get it to work on my phone), but the code is obfuscated, and damn hard to follow. Using the Nokia emulator, you can check the network traffic generated by the app, and it looks nothing like the Jabber Protocol (I think I may have just contridicted myself...).
In the end though, I found mobber (http://gryf.info/mobber/en). It works on all phones (that allow full wap access, which my phone doesnt), and is based on the standard Jabber protocol. And best of all, it is open source. Initially I was confused as to why the MXit guys would develop their own protocol for this, when Jabber would work fine, then afterwards it occured to me it might have to do with the XML part of Jabber incuring more overhead, wich means more bytes sent, which means you spend more money. But after checking the size of a 30 character message sent with MXit, and a 30 character message sent with Mobber (normal jabber client), it turns out standard Jabber ends up being smaller. But only because it doesnt get a 9 byte confirmation message back from the server...
Anyway, bottom line is it looks like Mxit use their own protocol based on the Jabber one. Mxit guys can talk to Jabber guys, and vice versa. If your phone does not support Mxit, use mobber (you will need to create a Jabber account beforehand though).
Of course I could be horribly wrong....

What is the problem, is your phone not supported or is a problem when you try login/register ?

When I try to register it just locks up and crashes the whole phone.

Give mobber a try. You will need to create a Jabber account first using a normal PC Jabber client (GAIM for instance) on a server (I recomend jabber.obsidian.co.za), then download the mobber client to your phone and login in with the account you created. Mobber is not as userfriendly as Mxit, but it works, and you can access all the guys on mxit without any problems.
If that doesn't help, there are only two other things that can be the problem. Your wap portal or your phone. If it is the wap portal, you just need to change to a different one, as some portals (vodafone live for example) restrict access to their domain, and browsing only. If on the other hand, it is the phone, there is little you can do except maybe try upgrading the firmware (not recomended though). On my ancient phone (6310i) for instance, the ports are retarded, and it only allows access to whatever port is used for browsing. The standard Jabber port (5222) for example is blocked, and whenever trying to connect to the server, it says connection failed.
about the ports:
i think that the default vodacom settings don't allow non-standard ports to be used (5222 for example).
So, you would have to use the exactmobile.co.za settings which allow traffic on any port. (9119 is used by MXit)
Although, I reckon that MXit now has a deal with the networks to allow port 9119 traffic on their default internet settings.
More Info:
I wrote up some info on how MXit works and what ever else I could gather here:

I also have a list of Jabber J2ME cellphone clients there too....

There is no MXit version 4 and those skinned versions at the moment are illegal. AFAIK 3.1 will be the next version and will allow users to transfer photos.

Well. I've installed mxit 5 on my 9300i. But as soon as the app opens the phone locks up and I've to take out the battery. AS the front screen is dead I can't see if something is happeing on the front screen or not.
So I'd like to know if MXit displays the chat part on the front screen or if it is actually the phone hanging.

Post for some help in this thread on the MXit forums..
