DA says no to live TV debate with ANC

THE DA has refused to allow its Cape Town mayoral candidate, Patricia de Lille, to take part in a live TV and radio debate with ANC candidate Tony Ehrenreich.
The live debate would have taken place on May 1 on the current affairs show broadcast on SABC1 and SAfm radio.

Journalist Vuyo Mvoko, anchor of election debates at the SABC, wrote on his Facebook wall that the ANC had agreed to the debate but the DA had refused.

"When I first told her about it Western Cape Premier Helen Zille said I would either have to organise her a debate with Jacob Zuma or get the ANC to announce its mayoral candidates for the metro [cities] and get them to agree to debate the DA counterparts," Mvoko wrote on Tuesday.

"I followed up with a ... written request and was told I would have to organise the ANC's metro mayors candidates first. I don't know why I had to remind DA that SABC has neither the power nor authority to tell ANC what to do, to which they replied, today, with a 'NO'," wrote Mvoko.

Ehrenreich confirmed to Sowetan that he was willing to debate with De Lille.

The DA's head of election communications, Gareth van Onselen, confirmed the DA had refused to take part in the programme.

I find this interesting; will people attack the DA for backing out of this in the same way that Zuma was attacked for not debateing Zille?
 
You can't debate with any local ANC representative because they continuously digress the topic with statements like "since the ANC came to power 15 years ago, 6-million South Africans have gained access to basic necessities like water and electricity" when the debate is around poor service delivery in a municipal district. The ANC have and will always counter-argument failures with so-called long-term successes.

Sounds like sound political strategy to me. They obviously want to find out the Mayoral canidates the ANC will announce after the elections

The DA have nothing to gain & all to lose in a 'de-bait' with this Tony. It's the same reason Zuma won't debate Zille. He's got nothing to gain, he's in power and appearing in a debate where he may risk losing points is ...er... pointless.

But has Ehrenreich not already been confirmed as ANC Mayoral candidate or is it just speculation?

If they run a series of debates with each of the major metro's mayoral candidates then I say "no problem".

The SABC, by association, are being very disingenuous by focussing only on Cape Town. What about Joburg, Tshwane, eThekwini, Nelson Mandela metro's?

There is not only one mayor in the whole of South Africa...

The ANC have not named any of the other mayoral candidates, only Cape Town. The DA are fishing for the names. It's good to know your opponent!
