Why Telkom lags behind

"The fact that the CEO’s bonus is paid according to company profits rather than customer loyalty or staff happiness makes this a particularly challenging issue."

/me just shakes his head...

This is exactly why Telkom should be a non-profit organisation with no shareholders. The only stakeholders in Telkom should be the customers.

Having shareholders as a listed company makes Telkom a profit centered share price driven entity that cares only about milking the maximum from the customers.

Either re-nationalise Telkom, or completely de-regulate telecomms in South Africa and give us a proper regulator that looks after the interests of the customers exclusively.

Papi's got this little spreadsheet into which he can plug the bonus he needs...

click and whoopie out pops the telkom tariff - Sizwe did this for years.

One day his successor might have to look at things the other way and check the competition's tariff first and then plug in all the variables to see if his bonus field is red or black.

The major shareholder of Telkom is the government which is expected to be non profit organisation. But in South Africa this is not the case.

Telecos should be listed as "Essential Services" and a Public utility (Which they ARE!) Being listed on the stock exchange is already in conflict with the publics interest.

Company Profits == Salary; Customer Satisfaction <> Salary

The fact is that customer satisfaction does not mean a fat pay check for the guys at the top.

For any listed company their immediate interest is with their shareholders.

That's why to me, a listed monopoly, like Telkom is only bad news for the consumer.

Customer satisfaction will only affect the paycheck when customers vote with their feet. This will only happen when a choice is available.
