Anyone landed work on freelance websites?

Which ones are worthwhile? If u landed any work, how did it go, and was it worthwhile?
 
i stated using getacoder and freelancer in 2007 , well i have to say it never really worked out for me the project with the most money that i could grad was 35 us dollers .......that is my own experiance ....but some will tell you differently
 
Used to way before the "dot com boom". After that I think India caught on and you would get okes saying "Dear Sir. I have a team of 60 developers and we can develop a complete <x> for you for $35" etc. I imagine by now everyone has learnt their lesson with this however I think you'd probably struggle a bit to build a decent rep now as some guys have been at it for years and have a massive amount of jobs under their belts.
 
I did once but it was article writing that lead ppl to a scam site which i cancelled lol! As for dev work i was going to try but a combination of little experience and just astarting out i knew i would struggle (plus u don't know if the person will pull out) so i had to get a proper day job. But it would be nice to be a successful freelancer in some cases.

Different for coding - but someone starting out can try get experience with freelance

I'd look into elance.com - I've been watching it for a while now, and they have over 1000 PHP projects up for grabs. Would that be critical mass?
 
I use 99designs.com, they are active and secure payment for projects. If you win a project you make some nice cash. I used to work on elance but they are just too busy and big. If I can recommend a site for coding and development it would be odesk.com, they are pretty smart with a professional fresh look at things.
 
I've looked, but I never jumped aboard and bid on projects, and therefore never got any work. Some of it looks promising. Also check out elancer.com
 
Well, I put up a job on Freelancer.com last week. I am looking for a rework of my website "look". I got lots of bids from all over the world, mostly the sub continent. I narrowed it down by only replying to those who had sent me a personalized reply.

I have been communicating with a guy in Pakistan who has hundreds of successful projects under his belt - as listed on Freelancer.com. The long and short is that he offered 2 options. A rework of the look for US$500 and a whole new website for US$1000. My current website has online purchasing and is fairly extensive.

I am leaning to a whole new site as my current website mgt does not allow many types of changes. But I'm a little reluctant to pull the trigger... Don't really know why. Any tips on what I should look for and ask him?

Hired him. Been a pleasure to work with so far. Fast and responsive and, importantly, an eye for design. He has now started the coding.

Well, that was in June. Started out hot and then faded fast. Now 2 months overdue on a one month project. Seemed to get dumber and slower as the project moved ahead at glacial speed. :(

I have filed a dispute. Freelancer makes you negotiate first - although I have been doing this with him already. You make an $ offer, he makes a $ counter offer. Do this 3/4 times. Then I think they suggest splitting the difference. (This is negotiating?). Then if you don't agree, arbitration.

Now looking for someone to complete the job. May try odesk as it is recommended on this thread.
 
Londo, what language/framework/CMS is your site developed in?
 
Hi. I have worked on Odesk for about two years. Their are fixed price and hourly jobs. Hourly payment is guaranteed and fixed is not but I have never not gotten paid before. Some jobs the bids are low but imbetween their are decent paying jobs especially for web designers and magazine designers. If you use any of the payment methods on their I highly recommend Payoneer. Their rates seem to be the lowest. They also send you a debit card which you can draw money out at any ATM that supports Mastercard. You can also load funds directly to your Payoneer account if you like aswell as the card is supported on most of the other freelance sites aswell. You can also get a virtual US bank account with Payoneer which you can use to register on Paypal which when you receive payments from Paypal you can withdraw the money to your Payoneer account. Hope this helps you.
 
Well I do a lot of joomla stuff. PM me if you want help, also do work for cheap, lot less that $500-$1000 that's for sure and no restrictions.
 
Online freelance websites are nice but it is always better to a person to person meeting where you can actively engage on the topic at hand. Small systems and sites can go nicly though these websites but when it goes even a bit big freelances like promising and then they always fail to keep those promises. i know from personal experience cause i used to be a freelancer aswell as allot of my friends.

Its also always nice to know who you doing business with cause the guy at the other end could be a crack addict or something silly. If i do work now i try and meet my client and if its not possible i at least have a phone or Skype conference where we can talk cause only so much can be discussed through emails and messages.
 
One idea might be to find LinkedIn groups that are in your line of work, and watch for people posting contract work.
From what I've seen there are a lot of job groups.

Went to arbitration. He lost. Or so they said. He got almost half the fee, but less than he wanted (75%). I am not unhappy as he had done about 1/2 the job. The front end. Now I need the back end to be done.

I have posted the job on oDesk. They offer a $99 service where they help select a contractor. The fee is refunded if you end up hiring through oDesk. I will probably go for it as I have a hard time cutting through the bs as it is too technical for me. I just look at the portfolios, but that was not enough with the guy I had from Freelancer.com
 
You've been burned on a freelancer site and are now using another freelancer site? Find someone in your city, there are plenty of places who do Joomla development.
