MTN's alternative to ADSL

HSDPA = igh-Speed Downlink Packet Access or HSDPA [[1]] is a new mobile telephony protocol. Also called 3.5G (or "3½G"). High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is a packet-based data service in W-CDMA downlink with data transmission up to 8-10 Mbit/s (and 20 Mbit/s for MIMO systems) over a 5MHz bandwidth in W-CDMA downlink. W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) is a type of 3G cellular network. W-CDMA is the technology behind UMTS (a.k.a. 3G) and is allied with the 2G GSM standard.

This product provides an uncapped internet access offering, as well as a static IP address.

Basically read all the info on that link and you end up probably paying the same if not more than with Telkom. All they offer is free national internet with various payment bundles for international connections..... but they do not disclose what these are :rolleyes:

Fact is there will never be cheap international until telkom are castrated.

But why do these operators insist on high rates for local content is beyond me.

Best i can figure is they're a bunch of cheapskates :p

Doesnt the fact that you can download 3mb in 12sec make this a 2MB service... assuming they are using the max theoretical speed. But now this is apparently uncapped... so you cant really be charged per gig, but I'm geussing it's gonna cost a whole load more than we can afford.
 
Big deal - all they are talking about is HSDPA which is an enhancement on the existing 3G networks which both Vodacom and MTN already have. From other posts on the forum, Vodacom already have deployed HSDPA in certain areas. Theoretically, it will provide download sppeds approaching 2Mb/s (1920kb/s) but the upload will still be limited to 384kb/s until HSUPA is launched.

Isn't this SO typical of MTN to make a huge hype over something before they even launch it. Then when they launch a dying technology like EDGE, they still make a huge hype over this and everyone believes them and thinks this is the best thing since sliced bread. :mad:
 
Mtn are one of the only independents out there who can offer a complete telkom free service (since voda=telkom in shares, sentech=government=30% telkom, etc.) whether they will or not is another thing. Or... whether they will be allowed to or not... But I guess either way we are looking at an unaffordable service. BTW - they are not referring to any ADSL package - their no cap ADSL product is way overpriced. I checked this already - in fact the salesman tried to talk me out of it before I got all the details. This is a completely wireless product like EDGE and 3g, just faster. Nothing new...
