Downgrading to something around R150 000

So anyway due to various reasons I am forced to look at downgrading my vehicle :mad:

Must meet these requirements:

Price: R150 - R165K maximum
Type: Ex demo or very low mileage second hand
Must have fairly good performance, but very good fuel economy
Can be a diesel (although I swore I would never drive a diesel) :(
Must be a sedan and preferably with a service plan

The only option I really see is a VW Polo (2010-2011)

My first choice was a Peugeot 308, but it's out of my range.

Anything else I should consider?
 
the honda civic.should get that price range,good engine and good mileage.value for money!

gonna agree to disagree with you..lol if you stepping down from a higher range the std equipment of the kia is hard to fault..but then again to each his own..
 
Get a Toyota if you want a great downgrade.

There's no excuse for downgrading :mad: :P
 
It's going to be hard to find a low mileage, performance sedan for R165K or less.
Not sure what you define as fairly good performance but none of the Polo's are performance vehicles.
The 1.9 TDI is no longer made and the new 1.6 TDI's puts out a measly 77kW. They do give great fuel consumption though.

I was in the same boat a year ago and bought the Kia Cerato 2.0 SX and it's the closest I can think of that matches your requirements.
- It's a sedan
- It has enough power (115kW and 194Nm or torque)
- It is very fuel efficient for a 2.0L (6.3L/100km open road and about 7.5L/100km combined)

The only other option I can think of is to downgrade your requirement for less power and go with a Polo or similar.

He should be able to find a 1.9 TDI / 2.0i sedan if he's willing to get a 2009 model.

Not ground-breaking performance, but reasonable for something around R150k.

If you want to downgrade properly. Look at the year of your car, and mileage and get something similar of a lower spec. If your car is a 2009 and you want to get a 2010 downgrade vehicle you will get a lot less bang for your buck that if you went with a similarly price car made in 2009. Just saying, and because the mileage is the same it *should* have about the same wear and wear as your current ride.

I would find a 2010 Cerato (look at Pauls explanation) - It is probably the only car that fits your needs.
 
If he's more interested in fuel economy than "faily good" performance, I doubt a 1.6 Polo (or anything else >=1.6) is a problem in terms of performance. You don't really want a 2.0l for fuel economy, but it's up to the OP.

Must be a special - toyota.co.za has the recommended retail price at R181300

- No alloy rims
- Only 2 air bags
- Manual windows in the back
- 74kW 1.3L engine
- 0-100km/h sprint in 13 seconds

It's basically a direct competitor to the Hyundai i20 1.6 which costs R 167,900.00 (no special deal).
The i20 has a slight upper edge with
- Front and rear electric windows
- 91kW 1.6L engine
- 0-100km/h sprint in 9.5 seconds

The 91kW i20 engine has the same fuel consumption as the 74kW Toyota engine (5.9L/100km combined).
Toyota really aren't impressing me lately with their engine technology.
I'd at least expect better fuel consumption with a detuned engine but they can't even get that right.
What happened to the RSi engines? Since their demise there is no such thing as an affordable Toyota which delivers spirited driving.

@ Mike, you'd be surprised that a Corolla is not a downgrade

@ Paul, the i20 is excellent value for money and yes the R166k is a special price, even on the AurisX. The difference in fuel consumption comes in traffic whereas the 1.33 Engine will consume less and on the open road the both cars will be the same. Also the i20 isnt in the same class as the Corolla meaning its a B segment car.

I wish Toyota would bring something back to our shores! Trust me its sad for us loyal Toyota fans. There are rumours of a Supercharged AurisX TRD coming out this year end, but I wouldnt bet on it.
