Merc C230 - Good deal?

Seems like a decent deal.

Are they insanely expensive to fix as apposed to other cars, say a Golf Tdi?
 
Any premium German car that is out of its maintenance plan will be expensive to fix. Haven't you wondered why they suddenly become so affordable? :P
 
Have you driven the car?
I found the c230 very disappointing. It looked great, but went nowhere.

Um... thats a good car. Ask anyone who's worked on them, the C230 is quite something mechanically. And it's the best looking merc IMO.
Just don't lose the key... laser blah blah... 3 grand later for a replacement! Not a bad price for those KM, no. Bear in mind you can't go on 'they are reliable' cos it doesn't matter how reliable they are, you just need one expensive service to knock you back to reality.

Same with the Golf. I only have 1 key and VW want something diabolical for a spare. Something like R3 - 4 k :eek:

I mean that merc is fairly lowish mileage, I guess I would need to start replacing stuff at around 100 000Km's.
 
It's not a bad deal but I wouldn't say it's particularly impressive either. The older models of the C230 didn't have a very nice interior but they did something about it and it looks better on the later models. Also I would only take something like that if you *could* afford a car closer to the 175/200k mark as you might have to fix some stuff, but could be lucky and it will run well.
 
Hear what you are saying Koffie. Kinda in that boat with my TDi, if something goes, it will hurt.

I mean, I could afford to fix it if it broke, wouldn't be happy about it, but I guess thats the chance you take.
 
Im a Merc fan. I would suggest a Merc any day. Check the prices for parts, cheaper than a Camry and a Bmw to service. I service cars so I know.

I've discovered this is BS - its only the case if you take it to the agents to be serviced... and any REALLY expensive part you can import yourself at a fraction of the cost.

(btw - I drive a Honda and Toyota)
 
I drive an E39 5-series, with more than 150,000km on the clock. It's no more expensive to maintain than my in-laws' Corolla. It drinks plenty more, but maintenance isn't anything horrendous.

I was actually looking at the previous gen. M5 :( I want a V10 or 8
 
Is this the one with the supercharged 1.8? Those engines are know for alternater failures, in 2007(?) the dealer wanted nearly R13k to replace it.

Grimspoon - take a close look at the car and take it to a reputable mechanic. I would seriously consider that car if I could afford it. perhaps knock the price down just a little, but be prepared - those are good Km's on the clock IMO, those mercs are pretty robust. Get more than one opinion if you can... like I said, I'd consider it if I were in the market for a car right now. Best looking Merc by far - I don't know about the interior thing that someone mentioned earlier though... I guess you could decide with your own eye.
