Telkom has launched its "Contact Me" message service to enable people to get in touch

Marry me Richard? :D

LOL! and fight the opressors of the SA nation.. we shall fight them on the oceans, on the beaches.. my Churchill speeches are really painfull

Hehehe, get a room :D:D:D

A good move I reckon and this will benefit the consumer as well as Telkom.
Telkom no doubt want to promote more voice calls over their network and this is one way of doing it. For once though, there seems to be something in it for the public as well which is great.
Can it be??

I tip my hat. :)

Well they are essentially just generating more phone call revenue for themselves arent they? Coat it with candy and suddenly Telkom is caring?

why not get a 1000 people leave a "Contact Me" to LuLu...

LOL!
lol this is telkom, they'll probably cap it to 3 a day ;) reason: copper wire doesn't have the capacity, or the average person uses 1.4 contact me's a day so 3 should be enough, or our geography isn't suited for the service. or maybe mr. white will come up with a more innovative excuse this time.

but the plan about getting 1000 people to do this at once is brilliant :D

Surely this system is open to this simple abuse (as Telkom would describe it): callers using it for quickie messages (much like SMSing - but free and in your voice). Maybe there is a very short length for your name recording... but enough time for something like "7:30 at bar X".

Wonder if telskim thought of that?

Great! let's get this info out to all forums we participate in and to the newsmedia asap.

:p to telskim

They know now im sure. Imagine them having to pull the service. How embarassing would that be!

****goes off to abuse Telkoms great new service*****

it will probably be toned/capped somehow.. starting with limited time for name cause people just put a msg there and then after people use it to signal others of stuff you know like we do .. if the phone rings twice, and then thrice come fetch me :P etc..

How Ironic, from a company that is totally out of touch, with their customers and reality

Sounds like a positive thing - it should increase telkom's revenue.

Steve White again :
'We are continuously working on introducing new services that will allow our customers to enjoy a world class communication experience,' says Steven White, Telkom Executive for Product Development.

Somebody at telkom, please inform Stevie that telkom's vision does not
include "world class communications".

This objective was officially dropped by telkom a few months ago
(this is fact not parody, it's still funny though)

I can see this is open for abuse.

A "call me" from Vodacom at night is not that bad as it is SMS based.

A "call me" Telkom style can be highly annoying any time of the day.

I would prefer not to receive "call me" at any time.

Those who wish to receive them, should have the option of selecting it.

If I get an unwanted "call me", I will cause a stirr.

Does the voicemail option on a Telkom line cost extra?
Could this be a clever way to get people to pay for Telkoms voicemail service???

Ok, I have a practical use for this service, one that can be used immediately and as a form of protest about the DoC's failure to fulfill its promises - read on:

According to my calculations [and I could be out by 2 days, but that is IMO irrelevant], yesterday [2005-12-06] was 8 full weeks since the DoC's 2nd Colloquium started, and we were promised - by Deputy Minister of Communications, that within 6 to 8 weeks, we would see some implementation steps towards reducing telecoms costs in South Africa.

So, I propose that we all remind DMoC Roy, that his self-imposed time limit is up, by using Telkodemonopoly's "Contact Me" service with all of the following DoC telephone numbers [from www.doc.gov.za]
  • Appoinment Secretary Regina King
    Tel: 0124278006; 0124278005
    E-mail: [email protected]
  • Appoinment Secretary Freddie Wright
    Tel: 0124278177; 0124278006; 0124278005
    E-mail: [email protected]
  • Nosipho Nonyukela
    Senior Secretary, Ministry
    Tel 0124278177
    Email [email protected]
  • Elize Coetzer
    Control Administrative Officer, DG’s Office
    Tel 0124278167
    Email [email protected]
  • Vumokuhle Ntanzi
    Personal Assistant, Telecommunications Business Unit
    Tel 0124278509
    Email [email protected]
  • Khomotso Maloko
    Secretary, Media and Communications,
    Tel 0124278289
    Email [email protected]
Give your name as "8 weeks" when using Telkodemonopoly's "Contact Me" service, and let's see what happens - will the DoC suddenly start smelling the roses???

The objective is to get the DoC to start communicating - it is after all the department that is supposed to be able to communicate, but all it does is make empty promises, so let's get the DoC to Contact Us and tell us, why after 8 weeks of empty promises, nothing has been done to drastically reduce telecoms costs.

NB: licensing the duopoly in the form of SNOTata is simply not going to bring down telecoms costs for another 2 years for consumers [large corporates yes, but not for consumers]. SNOTata has already told the media that it will not enter into a price war with Telkodemonopoly, which means we consumers will still be overcharged for the next 2 years until SNOTata has it's own local loop.

Nice work ic.

When I read this:My 1st thought was that Steve White was again talking 5h1t3 - how many South African grannies are there still alive in South Africa? How many of these still living grannies, live in areas where Telkodemonopoly refuses to provide any kind of landline service [including no payphones]? Yeah that's what I thought - quite a lot of underserviced & unsatisfied grannies...

Why not issue a lot of heavy-duty roller-pins to those dissatisfied tannies and let them take their frustration out on Teklom with the roller-pins? :D

A good idea, but what use will it be in underserviced areas?

Do they still use those old plaaslyne where a couple of people still share one line?

This week we are world class.
'We are continuously working on introducing new services that will allow our customers to enjoy a world class communication experience,' says Steven White, Telkom Executive for Product Development.
Last Week, we were only Third World:
"Matthyser says broadband is a “First World” technology. It will be some time before it becomes widespread in SA."
What gives?
