Is it possible to use BBM on a handset other than a Black Berry?

I was wondering since BBM is so popular and one of the main reasons why people get Black Berry's in the first place, is it possible to get BBM for another kind of phone?
 
Nah, there were rumors of an Android version, but I don't know what happened to that. RIMjob probably realised what a stupid move it would be, since it would destroy the only reason people buy their phones...
 
I found a page on the Vodacom once that described a service that allowed you to have BIS on other phones.

If memory services me right it was called BlackBerry Connect. Now I am not sure if that only gave you the option to browse and receive email only, or if it covered all connection services as well.

I would imagine that BBM would not be covered since it requires that application to authenticate the connection type as one that utilizes the BIS instead of pushing messages as a data type that is paid for.

There is however an article on Cnet talking about this possible happening in the future.

1. The Cnet article is a week old. BBM will NOT go cross-platform
2. Blackberry Connect is an email solution only. No browsing on BIS. No BBM
 
That is a good question.

I checked out WhatsApp today, but it doesn't really come close to BBM. I dislike the fact that it uses your data bundle as to where BBM is free. Personally I would rather have use BBM, Gtalk and IM+ and adapt to my contacts on chatting. I mainly use BBM for family and friend and have GTalk and Skype (via IM+) for business contacts.

But Cross-platform BBM would have been an advantage.

Whatsapp does not use your data bundle, it works on BIS, i have been using it for months and so have many others, WA is fully BIS enabled and in no way at any point does it use any of your airtime or data bundles, there may be a charge for a standard sms during setup, it says something about sending an sms, i have never bothered to check if i actually pay for it. Otherwise once its setup its free to use on BB for the 1st year and then its a $2 annual fee which is like R12 these days
