Intellinet 3G router and K4505-Z modem

So I decided to go for the VDC 2G+2G deal. They gave me a k4505-z modem. I have an Intellinet wireless 300n 3g router. I do the usual things connecting it up with the router and got it to work (quite impressively for me I might add - 1700 ave dl speed).

This is the problem: If I switch the router off and restart it, the modem just blinks red - no network/connection/whatever. BUT, if i switch off the router, unplug the modem, switch on the router, wait a little while and then plug in the modem, the modem registers a connection/network/whatever. I dont want to unplug the modem everytime. My previous k3565-z didn't have this problem. The router is on on fw 2.15. Does anyone know how to fix this (without getting another modem/router/network).
 
If you are only getting 1700kbps then carry on using the K3565 otherwise log a fault with Intellinet for the K4505.
 
Thanks morkhans and cbrunsdonza, I already logged the problem with Intellinet and I am on the latest firmware on the router. I dunno where to find the FW for the modem, but will search for it (perhaps you can help with that also). I thought there might be a setting on the router to fix the problem. As a metter of interest, what speed should I be getting with the K4505?

Modem is rated for 21.1Mbps, in good coverage areas with ample backhaul to the tower people have posted 10Mbps+ on local speedtests.
 
Had a similar problem. Had a Netgear MBRN3000 router which was compatible with the K4505 (from Hauwei) but not the K4505-Z (ZTE). Swapped the netgear for a trendnet (which has a built in battery for power failures and using it in the car) and it works like a charm.

WOW!!! What is the best software to use to test? I want to check it again. I used Instanthelp - WinPing.

Where did you get the Trendnet and how much did it cost? (this is not really the route I want to go, but I might just consider it)

speedtest.net - Please remember that the speed of the modem is the max theoretical speed as detailed by the manufacturer. The nature of mobile is that everything is variable and resources are shared amongst all the clients on a tower.

Also look at the TPLink range of routers. There is a long thread in the Cell C forum discussing various routers.
 
I bought the TP-link MR-3420 from http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?products_id=423 to work with my cellc dongle. I just checked and it supports the K4505-Z modem as well. Plugged in the dongle, ran through the quick setup and was up and running inside 5min. Got great speeds and did not get dropped at all. Pulled the dongle out and put it back in, with power on and it found the dongle and connected again. Works so well! Can highly recommend dbg as well. Ordered on Sun afternoon, shipped on Mon and got delivered by 9am yesterday morning in Cpt.

Sounds great kim_bcs, thanks. I had no problems wit the K3565-Z modem. I could switch off and on and I got a connection everytime. With the K4505-Z modem, it seems I must unplug the modem and plug it back in after the router has started (if the modem was switched off) - kida schleb!!!!

Same problem. The K4505 Z is a very fiddly modem. There is an entire thread dedicated to the K4505 Z and Vodacom replacing them. Spent some time walking around the house trying to see if it was a signal problem or if it was a USB problem. It was inconsistent and the light would go off, and come on. Working fine for now. Holding thumbs it stays this way. Got the Trendnet from Incredible Connection in Sandton. It was R999 and gets the job done. The router is quite small and i was impressed with its range given its size. Good luck in getting everything sorted.
 
Quick update ... Intellinet sent me the latest beta firmware 2.16a. I will test it tonight and report back. Wish me luck!

11 May 2011 - Update 2 ... It didn't work ... bummer!!

12 May 2011 - Update 3 ... working with Intellinet to resolve the issue. The solution might be used in update 2.16 for release to the public

13 May 2011 - Update 4 ... just received another firmware update - will test it later and report back

FINAL RESULT:

The problem was not resolved - This is what Intellinet put onto their website after trial and error.

Users of the Vodafone Mobile Broadband K4505-Z 3G modem may need to unplug the modem from the router first, restart the router, and then plug the modem back into the USB port. The key is to connect the 3G modem to the router after the router has been started.

This is not ideal, but unfortunatley this is how it is ...
 
There is a post somewhere in the cell c forum about disabling the virtual CDROM on the device, maybe that will help you.
