I would imagine that it costs money to leave a message and maybe even to retrieve that message....
Just like the "free" answer call system that would answer the phone after 7 rings before you got a chance to come in from mowing the lawn... then your pensioner parents payed for the call even though they didn't get to speak to you and you had to make another call to get back to them.

I'm sorry ol telkom ol chap. But i've had Voice messaging to my friends for quite a while :/
So Telkom once again you've proven that you just don't know what the fsck is going on out there.
How bout charging a flat fee for local calls pm? Maybe that'll actually push up your landline calls.
I think this is a good idea.....albeit about 10 years late, so for telkom......seems to be spot on time.

Old service just reworked
About 6 years ago I used that exact same number to send messages to my parents also for free. Back then the number was used for collect calls. What I used to do is instead of recording my name I would quickly record the message I want to send them and when my parents receive the collect call they just decline it after hearing my name(message).
Maybe there were too many little kiddies like me abusing that system so they decided to just change it.
I noticed however the time in which to record your name is quite short and easy to miss. The nice thing though is that you get acknowladgement of when the message has been received.
I rate this very usefull for school children in general if they dont have a cellphone, which they shouldn't - damn spoiled brats.
