Shopping for a printer - any suggestions ?

Hi everyone,

I'm busy shopping for a printer and I'm not sure which make and model would suit my requirements the best. Here they are, in order of priority:

1. Cheap and reliable refill cartridges (I believe thats where HP makes their money, so Canon has been recommended to me in this regard).

2. Must be a colour printer and must be able to good quality print photo's (standard size would fine, A5 and A4 would be a bonus). The brand of the printer isn't that important.

3. Should be able to print on CD's and DVD's (actual disk as well as covers would be nice).

4. If possible, should include scanning functionality, but not a must.


I would like the best I could get for not more than + - R2,500.

Any suggestions on what I should look at ?
 
Seconded on Canon - maybe a Pixma 5200 or 6000.

yep, for that price its quite a good printer, AFAIK it has the same specs as the IP5200, but its just a bit slower.

If i cant find a cheap print head for my i550 i'll proberly get me an IP4200

is that true??? can it print full colour page (like a photo) in 3 seconds :eek:

didn't know inkjet printers can be that fast

On draft mode with 5% coverage, or something like that.

Set up a 5200 a little while ago - it spits out pages bloody fast!

Thats what it says , not sure how true it is. But thats staight from canon.
 
Got the IP 4200 - one small problem

Thanks for the assistance people.

I had been looking at the IP4200 and decided that it was the best bet. Went and got it on Saturday and installed it as soon as I got home. Must say, the photo printing is excellent (comparable to what you would get from a photo shop) and we're very happy with that.

We only have one problem with it: printing on CD's.

I have checked the manual and I'm 99.9% sure I've got it setup right, but the damn thing won't print onto the cd. I've tried Nero Cover Designer (the cd gets slid in and out of the printer, with the print heads doing one pass, but no printing) as well as the bundled software (got it to print, but it nearly missed the CD (only prints about a quarter on the cd, like a half moon on the bottom) and printed a bit on the special CD tray).

Anyone have similar problems ? any advice ?
 
If you figure it out please post here how you got it to work. I also bought the Canon IP4200 and are very happy so far with everything from speed to the quality of printing.
 
I have a Canon IP3000 and my brother has got himself the new Canon IP4200.

You won't make a mistake. Under R1000 for the IP4200 but worth much more. Don't pay R2500 for a printer.
 
Why are you people all stuck on ink jet printers? You can buy colour laser printers nowadays for R3500, delivered to your doorstep.

The quality of colour laser printers aren't up to par with the ink jets just yet. I think they're only 2400x600DPI while the IP4200 is 9600x2400DPI. Also there aren't any that print on CDs\DVDs.

Try re-aligning the printer head.

Also, when using the bundled software after clicking on print it gives you the option of aligning top and left. My suggestion would be to try and print a picture with a label or something. Once it's done have a look how far it's out of centre, work out which direction the pic must go (up, down, left or right) to be centred, i.e. if the printer is printing in the bottom left corner, use the aligning tool and set it more top and right. Best way would be to get yourself a labelling kit, label a useless disc, print, re-align, stick new label........ rinse wash repeat.

But in the end the printer shouldn't be out by that much. I know mine was only out by 1mm down and 2mm right. It might be something else. Try looking for a Canon printer forum.
 
Almost there...

Okay....so I downloaded the latest drivers and CD-Labelprint for Windoze 98SE, and there has been an improvement.

Instead of printing on only + - 10% of the disk (a half moon on the edge) its printing on exactly half of the disk. The strange thing is its only printing on the half closest to me (i.e. last half to go in), so the print head would be able to reach the other half (as it gets that half first), but it doesn't print on it.

I'm gonna try messing our around with the settings and use the label sticker (by sticking and re-sticking and re-sticking, etc. etc. 'til i get it right) idea, does anyone else have some advice (thanks to those of you who have helped so far !!) ?
