I seem to be suffering from split personality disorder. Both cars are in the same price range but they are very different. On one hand you have the quiet, staid, boring Corolla which looks ok and sips petrol which appeals to my sensible side. There are Toyota dealerships around every corner and resale value is good.

The Lancer on the otherhand is a sexy car, with more features, it's quick and fun to drive but sounds like the apocalypse at high speed in the cockpit. I'm also worried about support and fuel consumption.

At this point I'm not too sure whether boring and respectable wins or fun and sexy.

You sound like me. I am in a similar boat. Do I go flashy and fast or slow and boring. :rolleyes:

I personally would look at the lancer.
 
Neither, scratch off list and start a new one?

What's your budget?
 
If you don't mind a smaller boot, go drive a Suzuki Sx4. You'll be impressed.
 
What's your price range? About R220k - R250k? I wouldn't consider either...

I'd look at:
1. Ford Focus 2.0 Trend (hatch and sedan)
2. Honda Civic 1.8 i-VTEC
3. Suzuki SX4 2.0 4x4
4. VW Golf 1.4TSI Comfortline

None of them Toyota-boring or Lancer-left-field...
 
I own the 2008 GLS Lancer.
I get 8 or so litres per 100 on long trips and 10 -13 litres per 100 in town. Pretty good support but nothings gone wrong so they haven't really been tested... I've had it for 3 years and I have no complaints.
 
Corolla is super boring, get the Lancer or something else. Just not the corolla.
 
You couldn't pay me to take the Corolla. The lancers look ossum and have super soft transmission (not sure if it's a good thing or not), but I'd also give the ford focus a looksee.

Just saying.
 
Looking at a car in the 150-165k range. Boot space is essential. Both cars have a 3 year motorplan and 5 year service plan. I also don't want anything older than a 2009 model.

Not interested in anything French or Ford.

How important is power?

Jetta 2.0 comfortline, its got a huge boot.
 
I drive a Lancer, although it's not the 2010 model. Fuel consumption isn't great but its features are excellent for the money. Don't worry about support on them. Daimler Chrysler comes to the party should other dealers not be available. When they poured diesel into my tank instead of unleaded at after 17:00 on a Sunday afternoon, the Mercedes roadside assist guys promptly took care of the situation for me.

The problem with the Kia is that it competes with the Corolla but Kia has a history ofbuild issues and is just as boring. The pricetag is better but my budget does stretch towards the Toyota. It also is lacking a sixth gear, etc.
