Contract migration downwards to "Use your own handset"

Hi all
I need to migrate my MTN 500 contract to a "Use your own handset" 350 package. The local MTN SP shop are quite sure I have to wait until AFTER my contract has expired to do this.
Surely it needs to be done in the month BEFORE the contract expires? Otherwise I'll be told, "now you owe us 24 months of lost fees"?
My contract expires on the 15th of May, so this is getting urgent :confused:

I think your contract automatically moves to a month on month contract when it expires, so you shouldn't have a "24 months loss" issue. Check with them though.
 
@sjm - the contract has been running for a couple of years, so I know I'm over the 24 month mark. Today was when I was trying to check, but the people at the shop are less than helpful. And this was MTN SP, who are a lot less useless than Autopage.

@valis - I tend to agree, which is why I'm going the own handset route. Still, snakepit has been very helpful in getting my recent problems sorted so I will remain hopeful...

There used to be UYO (Use Your Own) options under upgrades on MTNSP's site, but not anymore. Have they been discontinued?
 
I took out a new contract after having my prev phone for 3y4m.

As you are beyond your initial 24months. You may change your contract at anytime. Obviously if you take out another 24month contract, you'll be tied in for 24months...

Should you wish to leave MTN you would need to give 1 month's notice.

Look on MTN's site there is a number there for when you wish to order contracts from them.

In the past I have found them more knowledgeable than instore staff.
 
The reason they tell you to wait til after your contract expires is that they dont want you to pay downward migration fees, if you wait til your contract is on month to month you dont pay the charge, and from what i can the in the difference in tarriffs it would be a hefty one...
 
I've trashed a few phones in my time, but my E71 is still rock solid. And Symbian is not popular, so you can buy an equivalent quite cheaply :) Saving up for a tablet now..

Please be advised that as of 26 April 2011, all early upgrades are for a 24-month period from the date of the upgrade. Furthermore, all customers on a promotional package are now also eligible for an early upgrade.

In line with the existing MTN policy, all contracts may still be upgraded from month 21 onwards. For these “early upgrades”, the new 24-month contract period will now start from the date of the early upgrade. For example, if a customer upgrades in month 22, the new 24-month contract will start from month 22, and not from month 24 of the original contract. The two remaining months of the original contract would, in this example, essentially fall away.

The same rule now also applies to promotional packages. Hence, as from 26 April 2011, a customer on a promotional package is now also eligible for an early upgrade without any penalties, according to the same principles outlined above.

My E71 switched off the one day and never switched back on, they couldnt fix it either...
