Unlocking/bypassing simlock on MTN Merlin U630

The Problem:

I have an MTN locked Merlin U630 data card on an MTN contract, I wish to use my mtn sim card in my Nokia 6021 (EDGE supported) phone and a vodacom pay as you go simcard in my data card (seeing as that you can now buy prepaid data bundles from vodacom and they have greater coverage I don't see too much point in MTN 3G)

The Solution:

I thought of 3 soloutions in order of preference:

1. Unlock the data card - this should be simply the case of finding unlocked firmware and updating the data card OR getting hold of the MEP to unlock it. Easier said than done - If anyone knows were I can find the firmware or someone who unlocks data cards (the people I know just do phones)

2. Updating the data card with Vodacom firmware - not sure if this will work

3. Bypassing the simlock by manually dialing up


Any advice??

I don't think it is simlocked.

I have a merlin u630 with mtn, and swop between mtn and Vodacom. Make sure that your profile is set up correctly, ie that you do not specify an apn that does not exist on vodacom network, like myMTN (the default). Vodacom use an apn called internet (as does mtn, so you can use this for both), as well as internetvpn if you need to connect to a vpn someplace.

Either way I don't think you could use the MTN data card on the Vodacom network anyway. MTN 3G is UMTS, Vodacom 3G is WCDMA. As far as I know the two are not compatible.

pm vodacom3g, he should be able to tell if it is compatible

They are the same thing for all practical purposes.

UMTS is the term used for the 3rd generation networks.
WCDMA is the radio technology used to implement a UMTS network.
 
download the latest firmware from Vodacoms site....at YOUR OWN RISK ...bmy bet is that it erases the simlock ...just as my card 1st only worked on Vodacom but after upgrading the firmware works on MTN as well....

Thanks for the advice guys.

Will first make sure the card is simlocked before doing anything else, I didn't look very hard because the mtn people said it was (but then again they say a lot of contradicting stuff), then I will try updating the firmware (Danger is my middle name, well actually it isn't, would make a silly middle name, but that is besides the point)
