So the time has come for me to get my first car! Do I take the Tazz 2003 with 30000km or the Citi Storm 2009 with 21000km. I can get the tazz for R55000 and the golf for R60000. What would you take and why?

Best of all, the Citi only has 21,000 kms on the clock, compared to the Tazz's 30,000 kms.

If it wasn't for the difference in age the Tazz would be the better bet. Maybe take both for a test drive. It's rare to find a old car with low km but it's not impossible. If the golf is in great shape that would be the better choice if you plan on keeping the car for very long.
Just becareful with insurance and theft. Insurance companies hate golfs unless you protect them like a bank vault.

What about service costs how much does a standard service cost for the tazz compared to the citi? Also what about the cost of replacing parts say if the exhaust needs to be replaced how much will it be for each car?
If you do it yourself very cheap. I helped friend service her golf once and the oil was the most expensive part of the service, back then it was about R400 total (plugs, air filter, fuel filter, oil filter & oil).
Pretty much the same from an exhaust place.

Personally I would go for the Golf. Forking out almost the same money on a much older car is just not worth it.
If you are worried about service costs....I sold my first Outback to someone who works for Toyota, and he phoned me the other day to tell me that after 190 000 km in the Outback, the service costs had worked out cheaper than a Tazz, which says rather a lot!

Both these cars are pretty old, but the Citi has a design from the 70's and the Tazz dates back to the late 80's. I'd go with the Tazz.

2009 CityStorm is not that old - very low mileage and easy to service. The fact that it's based on a design from the 70's has no bearing on whether it's a better car or not.

So far I'm counting three post that has no bearing on the subject, none of them made by me.
IMO the Tazz is overpriced. I know the km's are low, but you'll get nothing back regarding the "premium paid" a year later if you want to do a trade-in for something better.

The Golf will be my choice between these two. It's got a updated dashboard, servicing and parts are about the same, but leaning towards the Golf if your happing doing it youself and not bothered about buying at Goldwagen ect.

Yes, it does. Its suspension and safety features are from the 70's. Is that something you feel safe driving in? So it has an updated dash, but if you crash it you have 0% chance of surviving. Not a good deal.
My vote would actually be neither, and to go with a Mercedes Benz from 1985 to 1995. Servicing costs are low, features and safety are amazing, plus they are styling cars.

The Golf would be more fun to drive, the Tazz is probably the better car overall though.
You could probably find a very decent Merc W202 for that price. The fuel economy on a C180 would probably be better that Golf, and especially the Tazz.
