CellC has text on their website describing what EDGE is (3G acording to them). Does anybody know if they support EDGE?

for my usage of <10Mb a month it is fine.
their calls seem to be cheaper than MTN and I refuse to use Telkom... sorry I mean Vodacom.

You do know that the majority of the Cell-C network piggy backs on Vodacom? And will do for the next 10 years or so?

I wonder whether the Cell-C roaming agreement with Vodacom includes data roaming or not?
As far as I know it does include data, however I am not sure of the stats for CellC using the majority vodacom's towers.....
They did have a long roaming agreement. However their data rates are more competitive than vodacom's .MTN still been the cheapest with their 1 GB

the cheapest data rate i can see on cell c's website is R1-55 per MB
whereas the cheapest i can see for vodacom is R0-49 per MB
and cell c doesn't even offer any data packages for prepaid users!
doesn't look all that competitive to me... ;)

And what's more, according to the Cell-C website, you are billed in 20kB blocks which are rounded UP (not down!) so you end up paying for data you have not transferred. Seems like an almighty RIP OFF to me...

I just tried Cell C gprs on Vodacom and it worked. I am in Stella in the North West Province at the moment by the way. I wonder where in the network you are switched over to Cell C. I assume you still use Cell C's internet pipe which I'd imagine isn't so big as Voda or MTN's.

Hi 3g_rox,
I can confirm that CellC is offering Edge in most of their network at this point in time.

The CellC roaming aggreement with Vodacom includes data roaming as well but unfortunately, Vodacom does not have Edge and therefore all Cell-C subscribers roaming on their network only have access to GPRS technology for now.

common misconception, this - actually, vodacom do have an edge network, and i believe they cover a larger part of sa than mtn does! their main focus is on 3g, though, not edge. more info here (http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=366722&postcount=1)

Not entirely true, I recall seeing somewhere on this forum that Vodacom has Edge in most of the Cape and the Freestate. It is Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West and KZN where they do not have EDGE. It has something to do with different equipment suppliers for the different parts of their network. I am sure Vodacom3G will confirm/deny this info if he reads this forum.

Thought this phrase from their site was rather funny:
"Because we like you so much we will only charge you for the amount of data sent or received."
They like me so much that they will only charge R2.00/MB?

Sigh thats such pathetic and desperate advertising.. If they said something like, "we only charge you for data received, not send" it would have had some sort of genuine meaning to it.

The EDGE network did start out faster in the Cape and Central Regions, leading to a funny coverage map, but the other regions are catching up. This will be balanced during 2006. Focus will always be on 3G though with EDGE as a fallback or in areas where 3G is not feasible.
