Windows 7 copying speeds across network painfully slow

Anyone else experiencing very slow speeds when copying data across a windows 7 wireless network, especially with big files 4gb+?

I recently decided to eventually upgrade to Windows 7, purely because I wanted DirectX 11 for dragon age 2. I’m wondering if I shouldn’t change back to XP though, as I can’t seem to solve the problem with slow transfer speeds. I was only getting speeds of 400kb/s when transferring files to & from the NAS, and after lots of googling & trying all sorts of settings, managed to get it up to 1mb/s last night. This is still painfully slow though.

I’m using a netgear DG834G 54mbps router, surely my speeds should be better than 1mb/s?? On the PC side I’m using a sitecom 300mb/s USB dongle, the NAS also uses a 300mb/s dongle.

Do I need to upgrade the router, or is this a windows 7 problem. If that’s it then I think I will re-install XP, and wait for Microsoft to 'fix' windows 7.
 
This might not be related to your problem, but I also experienced issues like that and it was caused by acronis true image which was installed on the pc.
 
Have you tried Teracopy??

Why don't you install cable, you'll get much better speeds..

I'm happy to report that the router is not vertically challenged :D

I considered installing 3rd party copy programs, but FFS you would think that windows 7 coudl cope with copying 1 file at a time :confused:

Acronis true image not installed, in fact it's pretty clean as it's newly installed ( about 3 weeks ago ).

I haven't heard of SP1 for Win7 yet - but I am up to date with all the auto updates.

So no one experiencing the same issue then?
 
if you have any electrical items around it could also affect it. I had my hifi system in the same room with my router and once i moved it there was no problem. If you are in an apartment, especially older buildings, the signal also looses strengh. If the router is in room and your NAS or PC in another at an angle to it, the signal will effectively have to go through double the wall thickness - that can also play a roll. If you have nothing to do on a saturday, switch off all electrical equipment in the house and one by one activate them while transferring a big file. That way you are able to see if it is electrical radiation that is causing your problem. Remember to switch off your geyser as well. One of my mate's problem was caused by the geyser. Once we moved the wifi router to a different spot it we got a 50% in speed.

Well the router & NAS & PC are all in different rooms, but not more than 15m apart. My signal is running at 99%, according to the crappy software it uses.
I managed to already get a 100% improvement in speed by tweaking the settings - 400kb/s to around 1mb/s, but TBH I am hoping for a MUCH greater increase in speed. Not to sound ungrateful but a further 50% increase in speed by switching off the geyser, and all other electrical items just doesn't sound worth it.

I considered cable, but I would have to run it to 3 different rooms. As a last resort, yes, but I am hoping to avoid that if at all possible. Cabling is anightmare already, despite all my efforts to keep it under control.

Seriaaaaasly, why can't Win7 copy a file by itself? Why must I buy another prog to do what the operating system is supposed to do?? Thanks czc, not directed at you, but FFS! Com'on windoze, it can't be that hard can it??

Keep in mind that every situation is different. You might find that you increase is 10 times that. Until you have gone through all the possible problems there is no real answer. I'm just telling you what we have found in our situation. I have a 3 story house with the router sitting on the top floor. At a 70% signal strengh i get around 4.5MB/s - MB no Mb - my house is alot newer though. At my moms house which is all one level and alot smaller i cannot get proper signal when i am in the third bedroom - had to install a second wifi router, however her house was built in the sixties - different building materials - make a huge difference.

At this stage i would be very happy to get an improvement to 4.5MB/s
 
Have you tried getting the latest or different drivers for your wireless dongle?
If nothing has changed and it all worked before its most likely that its something like drivers or windows 7 config.

Also teracopy is very cool, being able to queue copies is a very nice feature.
