Just aiming to put togethere a basic PC with as much bang for buck as possible.

kingston 4GB ddr3 1333
chassis 450w
AM3 Athlone II X2 265 3.3ghz
ASUS M4N68T-M V2 gforce 7025
 
Those are my NAS specs right there, just I got a better PSU :p
It's not bad considering it's a dual core with over 3GHz.. Should handle most things and some light gaming
 
nice, thanx, seems like it should do the job then, for what I need. For the same price, INTEL was way more expensive. I've always liked AMD and the way it processes stuff, I do find it doing stuff a lot quicker, especially when you throw Linux/Unix under it....

Kuk, you buy what provides best bang for buck and I'm a long time AMD user but currently using Intel.

What is your budget and what are you trying to achieve?
 
What do you intend to do with the PC?

If it's going to be used for a NAS/HTPC, then perhaps look at something like the AMD E350 (which is a low power integrated CPU & GPU on the motherboard), but it's certainly not recommended to be used as a workstation!

budget is R1700 for a chassis, 4GB ddr3 1333 RAM, mobo and cpu.

the best i could do on INTEL was E5700 and a K U K G41 mobo. For about the same price I managed to find the AMD X2 265 @ 3.3Ghz (which apparently outperforms the E5700) and the board as above, which supports 1333 RAM in non oc mode.

The purpose of the PC is to do software development, some databasey stuff and the odd game, and basically just a home PC otherwise.
 
For software development you really need a much better caliber PC, especially if you're working with Java.
My PC (i7 860 + 30GB SSD + 8GB RAM) was around R10k which I'm using for software development and it was really worth spending a big chunk of my salary on it.

The minimum PC that I would recommend would be a Intel Dual Core E6500 or AMD X2 265, and both perform roughly the same. 4GB of RAM should be the bare minimum too.
You can get a very cheap Intel Socket 775 motherboard, but then you're stuck with DDR2, which would cost you about R80 more on 4GB RAM, compared to DDR3 1333MHz.

If you're going with onboard graphics, then you don't need more than a 300W PSU.
 
That PC will barely open VS and SQL Server Management Studio. yo will always install stuff in the pc later on, which will affect your pc performance.

yup using java, jboss, tomcat, eclipse, spring, postgres and mysql etc etc and all the usual J2EE stuff
currently working fine on an older dual core laptop DELL E6500 (Core 2 Duo T9600 processor 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM ), would love a heavier machine but cant spend 10K.
the board im getting supports 1333 RAM and faster, and with the 3.3 Ghz chip, it should give a bit of an improvement from what I'm using.
i am going to use onboard for now but will get a midrange GPU later on.
 
We do all our development on laptops (with an extra screen)
Specs:
T7500 @ 2.2GHz
3.5GB Usable RAM (32 bit OS with 4GB installed)

I usually have atleast 1 vm open with mssql 2005/2008 depending, eclipse on my main machine and all other dev tools, plus firefox and all my chat apps..

Works perfectly fine.. run at ~75-80% RAM usage

theres a big difference between MS based OS and UNIX based Opensource development. I've never needed anything bigger than this to develop using all my tools etc. MS is known to soak up resources whilst Unix/Linux tends to maximise every ounce of hardware.....not so?

I suppose for a mini home project, that machine will be just fine. I thought you were taking your work home with huge databases and applications and stuff.

Good point, heres a list of possible candidates for an extra +- 200-300......which one u guys think?

This is the one I was going to get --> AM3 X2 265 3.3ghz =625

AMD Athlon II X4 3ghz 640 Propus 876.66
AMD Athlon II X2 3.2ghz 555 black ed callisto 796.86
