Earlier this year we wrote about fibre to the home (FTTH) and how South Africa was lagging the rest of the continent thanks to the lack of progress in this area. This raised a few eyebrows and got a couple of people scratching their heads – and somewhat understandably so. International bandwidth coming into South Africa, and the rest of the continent, has sky rocketed over the last year or two, fibre digs are happening in most metropolitan areas, and we’ve finally got affordable uncapped ADSL bandwidth deals.
So what’s the problem? It’s that old chestnut, the local loop, bogging everything down. Lack of competition and access in the local loop means that South African internet users are like hungry kids, pressing their noses against the window of a gourmet all-you-can-eat buffet – mountains of bandwidth is tantalisingly almost within reach, but we just can’t get at it. Or, for the lucky few who can, the fork we need to eat it with is expensive, quite rare, and very, very tiny.
