Average Speed Prosecution - Is it legal?

So I now have like 4 traffic fines (received in the post) that says "exceeding the average speed limit of 100km/h - average speed 115-119"

It also says "Image available at authority" Duh!! How can there be an image if there are multiple "traps."

How does this work, and is it legal? How can the authorities charge me for a speeding at "115-119km/h" ?
 
average speed traps, have a google, but in short you enter in at a particular point lets call it A, the system records your number plate and at point B it does the same thing and records the time it took for you to go from A to B. Now the system knows if you drive at the speed limit your fastest possible time would be X seconds, but you did it in X - Y seconds. And presto you have a fine.

Yes, it's 100% legal.

The first camera films your car and number plate as you enter the controlled zone and starts a timer. When you leave the zone, the 2nd camera films both your car and its number plate. If there's a match with the 1st camera, your speed is calculated, and if over the speed limit, you are then fined.

There's average speed prosecution on the M5 in Cape Town, with two massive warning signs "WARNING: AVERAGE SPEED PROSECUTION". You can't miss it.

Before you go off and pay R4000! I heard on the radio that the system is currently in a trial phase... See if you can get out based on the fact that they're still testing the system.
 
I heard they don't charge you for speeding, its for reckless driving
 
This was on N3 near Balgowan (toward Durban). and BTW I have 4 fines that add up to 4k!

EDIT: Thanks Vegeta will do some more research and try and fight it to be dropped.

Have they implemented average speed prosecution on the N1 yet? I haven't seen any signs proclaiming that they did.

I've not heard anything...but I'm keen to find out on the forums not IRL if the fines are like that. Thats barely out of the 10% margin for error & 4k...harsh.
 
^^Yep, that's R1000 a shot, and if you get caught coming and going.... I think I'll even treat the R21 more cautiously than normal tonight.

Nope. The R21 is currently a lovely drive in the evening - it is extremely easy to forget the speed limit. I already try quite hard to stay within the limits, but catch myself speeding too often. Average speed prosecution is just another incentive to stay within the limits.

AFAIK, that average speed trap has been there for years now.
I know a few people who got that type of fine and had to pay.

Wow so these systems are actually real... I thought they were just signs. What do the "cameras" look like? Cos I know at the airport their numberplate recognition cams look pretty hectic and you have to park in front of them, so how do they have cameras that pick up every car coming past at 120km/h+ and even in the dark without flashing?
 
Those average trapping places have been around in KZN for awhile now.. not in trial phase or anything anymore...

but 115 - 119 averaging to R1000 a fine seems more than slightly extreme.. I would query that, unless one of the fines is for MUCH more than 115 - 119km/h
