Apple today announced it’s answer to BBM for the iPhone and other iOS Devices at the annual WWDC conference held in San Francisco; iMessage

iMessage is integrated into iOS5, and allows you to send messages, pictures and videos to any other iOS device with iMessage installed. This seems like a direct competition to BBM which works in a similar manner.

iMessage also supports group chats, as well as the new notifications feature of iOS5 also announced today.

Some additional features include: Delivery Reports, Read Receipts and Typing Indication

All we need another island in the land of communication.

Color me not impressed.

Not such a big deal but nice to have. Whatsapp is already the best cross-platform solution. But this is built into the devices so you don't have to worry about your buddy having the app.

I say the sooner I never have to send an SMS again the better.

but can imessage talk to bbm?

Or can we all just carry on using whatsapp and go on with our lives?

I doubt it, they run on completely different servers... But what is good is that it is built in to the OS.. May explain Whatsapp's decision to go free? And their decision to pull their iPod Touch/iPad support (although I think Apple forced them :p) ..Who knows.

I want something that can communicate with bbm, but I dont want to use those god awful BB's...

Yeah iMessage nothing more than bloatware IMHO!!! Why not include iWhatsapp (or something along those lines) as the standard messaging platform in iOS5??

Because - like with RIM and their future plans with BBM - Apple has got bigger plans for iMess. It's the race for mobile Facebook.

So with whatsapp can you message a BBM user directly or does the BBM user have to have whatsapp installed?

Also would whatsapp use the "free" Black Berry internet while using whatsapp or is this limited to the BBM service?

The Imessage would still require data and loads of it by the sound of sharing pictures, audio etc.

BBM isn't going anywhere and even Whatsapp is a disappointing app to use.

Nothing dissappointing about whatsapp.
