HP dv9500 will not boot up after Windows 7 upgrade (From Vista)

Hi Guys

Just updated my brother OS on his laptop, install went fine, computer ran windows 7, Installed updates for windows, laptop shut down, and will now not turn on any more. I know a fair amount about PC's but jack about laptops. Theoretically in my mind any sort of software upgrade should not effect its ability to start up. Blue light comes on when cable is plugged in but no other indicators on the laptop at all.

Is this an unhappy coincidence or is there some way I've bricked the laptop. (He sent me a link whereby updating BIOS can have severely adverse effects on HP's) not sure if upgrading OS updates BIOS (Don't think so)

Anything I can do to troubleshoot? Thanks ahead of time.
 
Remove power, remove battery, install battery, insert power , retry.
 
Is the power button just not doing anything? If you listen closely can you hear fans trying to spin up?
 
Nope completely dead, there is a blue light that comes on where i plug the power cable in but nothing else (I believe there should be an LED which should come on stating its charging the battery which remains off, I am hoping this indicates a faulty cable) can anyone confirm whether it could be due to update timing seems very odd. (right after windows updates) seems illogical but yeah
 
If you screwed the BIOS, it should still at least turn on. Might be a problem with the power button itself or the battery, if it needs the battery in.
 
Apparently should work without battery but no dice, and didn't screw with BIOS, just an OS upgrade and windows updates
 
IIRC there's a keyboard pressing sequence you can run on some hp's and compaqs at power-on that sometimes rescues you from this scenario. Try googling it.
 
Take out the battery and leave it out. Remove the ram and reseat it. Plug in the power cable. If it is still dead then you've got a bigger problem, like the m/board or other hardware component. These Pavilions are known to pack up and die after a while. Google the topic and you will see you aren't the only one. If that is the case, then it's probably just a coincedence that it died shorty after the OS upgrade.
