It's not as if my better half and I can leave her and go off to get better ;)

He is using Grippons and a homeopathic syrup called Flugon (I think that is what it is called). The pharmacist suggested minimum contact with the baby and for him to wear a surgical mask when around her to prevent transfer of the virus.

I am starting to get the symptoms of a cold - body aches and headache. Anything I can take to help prevent a fullblown cold or to treat it?

Vitamin C dose and for the symptoms MedLemon. Else see the Pharmacist again. As for the baby use surgical masks as advised but do not worry too much. Maybe a family member can visit to help?

Hence my question. Otherwise I would have dosed myself with Grippons already.
I would at least consult the pharmacist. Specifically mention that you are breastfeeding.

I would not go with the advice found on this forum. Not that it will be bad advice, but to protect my kid I'll go for the advice from a professional. I do not even trust the assistants in the pharmacy, but insist on talking to the pharmacist him/herself.

What I can recommend is to keep on taking your prenatal vitamins and some Blackthorn Berry Elixir. This should help in keeping the flu away.

My mom is coming over tomorrow :)

Phone your paediatrician, there is a reason why they are specialists - and often the same price as your GP. Not to scare you but their is a lot in the air at the moment. My 9mth old baby daughter was hospitalised on Thursday for a viral bronchitis, she was released the next morning.

You will have to monitor your babies temp the whole time to see if little on is getting sick - we use an electronic ear thermometer as they are more accurate than old style ones.

If you are breastfeeding, be very careful of home remedies. Rather see a dr.

Here's what you do, works every time.
took me two days to get over the flu, my wife started and we both got onto borstal and now we can play with our 5 month old again.

Borstol and zinc tablets.

Borstol tastes horrible but you know the saying.

Surgical masks and don't rub your eyes or wipe your nose without washing.

Then again. Babies have been getting colds at 2/3 months since the beginning of mankind. As long as they sleep well they will be fine. So dose them with medicine to knock them out.

EDIT: I remember there are capsules that you puncture on their pillows that seems to keep open their noses.

AMOF I could use some of those myself. I'm the world's worst sleeper. I could have been a superman (intellectually and physically), was it not of my deprivation of good rest.

I have been dead tired and sleepy from 10 o' clock in the morning since 15 years ago.

That stuff is healthy & will probably help BUT it will turn her into a milk cow of note....

Yes, I know :)
We had to throw away some of the milk because my wife had way too much.

But it is high in Vitamin C. Will help with the colds. Just do not exceed the recommended doses.

i had this cold for 3 weeks and it just wouldn't ease up so i went to the pharmacy and they gave me linctagon c. it's a fizzy tablet you drop in water and it's all a vitamin drink. i noticed women who are breastfeeding can take it as well. so maybe you can look at this. it was very good.

1. try to reduce transmission through contact - from your hands touching things that will go into the baby's mouth. most rhinoviruses are spead this way iirc. airborne infection less so.
2. breastfeeding should help to strengthen the baby's immunity.
3. understand that when you treat a cold, you treat the symptoms. it's a virus. it only lasts on average for a week. try to break reinfection through breaking the chain of contact.
4. very few meds will actually have trialled for safety with lactating mothers. the pr risk is simply too high imo for pharma. understand that whatever meds you take while breastfeeding, that there could be unknown side effects.
5. you will go to plenty of doctors plenty of times. babies are sickly things. they can't communicate. learn to distinguish their symptoms. get a good thermometer. get a good paed. get a good gp (my one has 6 of his own children).
6. get ready for secondary infections from your kid's nose to their chest, ears and eyes. the ears are an important one - you don't want infection there. grommets saved my sanity and my sleep.
7. try to avoid travel by air while your kid is infected. they have no way of equalising their eustacian tubes.
8. your kid is guaranteed of a runny nose all the way through primary school. cest la vie.
9. it will get better in summer, but in gauteng, respiratory issues like asthma and allergies are often a problem, so look out for signs of this.
