Google invests US$280 million in home solar project

I know it's silly but it's projects like this that make me a proud Gmail and android user.

The more projects like this the better our world becomes.

I don't like the idea of having the kit installed by the company and then having the consumer pay for electricity generated. The kit will very quickly pay for itself and then, in the end, the consumer continues to pay for what is essentially free energy. It's great for Google but not for the consumer. It would make more sense to continue to develop the technology, making it more affordable in the process.

That's unfortunately the price you pay for getting around the very large $30,000 installation cost. I wish some company in SA would show some initiative regarding solar energy, we have so much sun, but such dirty electricity...

Maybe the $280million investment requires some return, considering the risk of this never paying off?

Yeah this is a bit odd. Consider you pay more or less the same as for normal electricity? Whats the use then, make it cheaper on a monthly basis with the company responsibility for upkeep on the panels! or make it x months and then its yours! Don't be greedy selfish bastard just doing it for good public view and some points from the government but actually the consumers is still screawed with high bills.
