Who makes the best burgers?

I like the mention of Subway, and it not capturing the imagination of Saffers...

That might be cos the version of Subway we get here is a pisspoor comparison to the US and UK versions....
 
In the USA I went in to order the special of 6 burgers and chips and bottomless colddrink (well it's like a litre cup and you can fill it as many times you like), so I look at the menu and order and ask for chips and the girl looks at me not knowing what I am on about and no one can help me and I panic and after awhile I remember it's called FRIES.
 
I was not that impressed with them when I tasted their burgers.. but my US mate said it's nothing like the US, this was in Israel.

In the 80's there used to be a Burger King below ground level of the Golden Acre as you were walking from Cape Town Station down the ramp, on the left.
Burger King pulled out of South Africa with the likes of Kodak and Mobil back in the day. Best burgers we ever had other than maybe a close third or fourth with the Colonel Burger from Kentucky.
People used to even catch a train to Cape Town Station to go eat burgers.

Then later MacDonalds came to South Africa and it was such an anticlimax in comparison.
 
Can't wait - I just hope they don't go the same halal route that McD's did. There's nothing quite like a double whopper with bacon. :)

Steers has a reasonable burger and that is about all.
If Burger King comes to South Africa with the quality they had back in the 80's we may see a whole new ball game.
However I am sure there are people whose taste buds cannot differentiate the taste of good food and may even rave about MacDonalds.

I would kill to have Burger King (way better than McD's) and Taco Bell here! :D

Keith Warren, CEO of Yum!Africa, which owns KFC believes there is always space in a country for good brands. “The US is the most competitive environment in the world by a country mile. But even in those circumstances you get new competitors and new concepts.”

But, he adds, Burger King and its master franchisee will need deep pockets. “The capital costs cannot be ignored. McDonald’s has sunk about a billion [in today’s terms] into its SA business, but it has been a failure for the McDonald’s corporation. The company has made calculated decision to take capital out of SA to put into Russia.”

“If Divaris doesn’t have half a billion in cash he is wasting his time,” Warren adds.
 
The US is the most competitive, but SA is very quality conscious in its own weird way.. that would ultimately be why brands like McD's struggle here because their quality is below par in terms of what we're used to and what we want.
 
so the American invasion of crap food continues, have just come back from a tour of Europe, got sick and tired of the site of US fast food joints all over the place and it's the same in China

aah yes, Europe and China both place have USA fast food outlets and both places have not been attacked by the USA. Who knows if Afghanistan and Iraq have USA fast food outlets in their countries?

So why are you still using your computer and the internet its part of the US invasion of crap :rolleyes:

This is great news and it will create a lot more jobs as well.
