I have been a loyal MTN user Since 1995.

I went to MTN in East Rand Mall, as they were the only ones I could find that had the Item I wanted, I also told them that I will be travelling from Heidelberg to do new contract the application.

I arrived and filled in all the documentation, and asked what time I must come back. They then inform me that it can take up to 48 hrs to approve (WTF), I inform them that I drove from Heidelberg, I then realise they do not even know where Heidelberg is. Being in a good mood I Left there and accepted that it will take up to 48hrs. On Wednesday I get informed that MTN requested additional documentation, that they need, which I send on Wednesday Afternoon. I phone them on Thursday to hear if they got the documents, they say they will follow up and call me if there is a problem. I phone them on Friday morning and now suddenly they cannot find the mail, so I mail it to them again and make sure they have it. I phone them the afternoon and get informed the approval still in open status, I then ask them that if I prepay them for the whole 2 years subscription, if it will help expedite the approval, to which they reply that it will not help. I just got off the phone with them and still they cannot tell me how long it will take. I asked them for contact no's or email addresses of the persons responsible for the approval, I just get told they may not release that information, which just tells me that MTN knows that they are Fraking up.

So Frak you MTN.

Oh and if there are any MTN employees here that want to comment, It is not my fault that the company has moved from Hero to Zero.

Just to compare approval times of late: (This is my personal experience).
Vodacom : 4 hours and you have your phone
Virgin : 1 hour and you walk out with a phone
MTN : 6 Days and Counting

Thanks!!! i will not support mtn because of your bad experience!!!

It took 2 weeks for me to "get approved". They blame it on "new systems" and "backlog".

I renewed/upgraded a year ago. I did it via MTNDirect & I had my phone (delivered) in my hand 3days later....
(remember deliveries take most of that time)

I have been with MTN since mobile phones launched in South Africa and have been happier than my friends and family who are with Vodacom and CellC. I think its unfair for you to judge an entire companies performance by this ONE bad experience.

I would say go to the competition and in a year come back and tell us what you think about Vodacom's lack of service delivery and CellC lack of signal :p

I am sorry to hear about you SHYTE :p but I will stick with the provider I have MTN stays the number 1 provider in the country.

Ya, this is how I got my iPhone when there was no stock. Just phoned 808 and asked for retentions and had phone in 2 days. They had stock set aside for upgrade customers.

The shops can cause your blood to boil sometimes, best avoid if you can help it.

MTN has given me the best service to date and will continue to use them for all my contracts thanks :)

And why not order online and have delivered, got my first contract from them that way, took about 3 days

Welcome to myBB BTW

I think every network providers has it days.

Thou iv have a MTN Contract,2 years going, even upgraded last month exp for the fact I had to wait a day until I actually got the phone cause my upgrade day was the next day. Apart from that I make sure I don't make problems, cause I know MTN contract department doesn't not work 24 hours.

I would also reccomend MTNdirect for new contracts and upgrades,i have a personal experience of waiting for a Nokia X6 for 3months,i got my N8 from MTN direct in 3 days while MTN stores had long lists for orders.

I was just venting, as I could not believe the level incompetence, I have had to deal with. The other problem is that places like these make a bad name for MTN, although I still cannot believe that approval take so long, it is borderline ridiculous.

I have been back there 3 times now and every time there was someone complaining about the time it was taking to get approval. I also went to another MTNSP store and they informed me that approval on new contracts can take up to a week, So there are major problems that MTN have to address, as we live in an impatient society, me for one, and if there is another option that is faster and gives you the same, MTN losses anther customer.

BTW. I have been with MTN since they were still in testing phase.

I've RICA'd and the bastards keep on disconnecting me (3 times) at the most inappropriate times just when I really need the F^%^$ phone . MTN is really slipping !

I just transfered a contract into my name, which is essentially the same as opening a new account, it was easy. I gave them the documents they needed and I was told that it was done next time I checked...

Renewing my contract is as easy as going into the shop, filling in the forms and walking out.

Sorry you had a bad experience, but I personally haven't had any troubles with MTN.

Walked into CellC 3 weeks ago for a new contract. Took me 15 minutes to stand in line and no more than 10 minutes to sign the contract, get approved and walk out with a phone :-).

That's very impressive. I must say, I am quite tempted to port my number over to Cell C. Not that I have had any problems with MTN, but Cell C has far better HSDPA signal in my house than MTN.

Same MTN direct is the way to go, you never even have to walk into a shop and they have stock on phones that no one else has stock of. I got my iPhone4 from them when no one else could even tell me when they were expecting stock, not even MTN stores. Also took 3 days to get my phone.

I had a similar experience with 2 stores, 'til I gave up and went to their center in morningside myself. They have about a 1 hour wait queue there but at least they will probably be able to sort you out and should have stock.
In fact with vodacom I also had basically the same experience when I first opened a contract with them. Shops just didn't have stock, then they did but gave the phone to someone else etc. Signed up online for vodacomdirect and had a phone in 2/3 days.

So is it just the staff at MTN who are incompetent? Because IMO their network is the bomb. So if we can use their online ordering systems etc, maybe that is the way to go.

Vodacom is the most unreliable and you can't get any satisfaction out of it.
Cell C is great (esp if you in a HSPA+ coverage area) and it mostly works, there may be an odd day it doesn't work, but other than that its stable. Unlike with vodacom, you go for months, even years in my case, with terrible service.
Virgin... well i used them long ago, their data network was slow, sluggish, kept on dc'ing but on the bright side, it was consistent (at doing all that)

I've had my experience with MTN and I do understand your pain...

When I recently, after some struggle, got my contract canceled, I had to return the handset to an MTN service center.
There were literally only two people in line in front of me but I stood there for about 45 mins haha
Anyway... Eventually I was helped, but I sat there for over an hour to get my contract canceled.... The funny thing is, they took the simcard to check the serial number and their systems showed that the "simcard does not exist" haha epic!
Don't know what kind of operation MTN is running but it surely is not a very effective one...

I my 5 months with MTN it also had happened quite a couple of times that I phoned different departments such as the port department, the service provider, etc and they couldn't assist me because "their systems are offline" :WTF: seriously?!?

Never mind the Vodacom network being way better, at least for me... Used to get 1 or 2 bars 3G reception with MTN when I put down my phone on a table, but with Vodacom I almost constantly have 4 bars.

My application for a new Vodacom contract took about 30 minutes last week. Filling in the forms and waiting for approval.
If it wasn't for the fact that I wanted to port my number, I would've walked out with my new phone within 35 minutes.
