So this morning a prick decided to take a gap with his ****ed up old bakkie and I hit him full on. I didn't even had time to step on the brakes. Needless to say my car is a write-off. It's a 2000 BMW 323i with 255,000km on the clock. Immaculate condition, not that it matters now. What kind of insurance payout can I expect? Ballpark figure. The car is paid off, so I don't owe the bank anything.
 
Let's just say you'd be hoping the odometer was also a write-off.
 
The good news is that you're ok. The bad news is that you probably aren't going to get much.

You'll get its market value minus any excess.
 
Prices on Autotrader, etc are seldom an indication of the real market value. Generally market is a few thousand Rand less. Also, insurance normally pays a bit less than market value... anyways, good luck!

What's with people wanting to take gaps nowadays? :mad:

We almost had an head-on accident with some f-u [afrikaans box] wanting to overtake on a solid white line :mad: I'm glad it never happened, just a groot skrik.

Seems that people don't understand that the lines on the road means something...
 
one to many bmw drivers nearly wiped me out to only believe the one side of this story...

My driving rules, if there is a drunk, bmw, taxi or bus nearby I slow down and make sure to stay far behind them.
 
If you tell me who the insurance company is I will tell you what you'd get. Good insurance companies insure for retail value, but companies like Outsurance insure for trade in value and when they take off the access there's no way you could buy car like that for that amount. The autotrader isn't a good indicator because they are selling car at prices higher than retail value. The website that Fudzy posted will give you the correct values.

Yep, I always try and stay out of peoples blind spots and away from taxis/buses. Also always assume that the person in front in the next lane is going to cut in. If it looks safe I quickly pass.

I think it depends on whether you were insured at market or retail value.
