Xbox 360: First time connecting to Xbox Live - can't connect

Hi everyone,

Bought a Xbox 360 (new 250GB black unit) late last year and decided today to network it to my pc in order to stream all the movies from my pc to my tv. Problem is:

*I've connected the Xbox via Wireless and managed to see content on my TV via Windows Media Centre and Xbox's Media Centre. When trying to play one of the video files, it says that I am unable to play the video and need to do an update before I can play the video - it then takes me to Xbox Live. However, I don't have a Xbox Live account yet and even when trying to Join Xbox Live, I can't get it connected.

I've assigned an IP address to the Xbox, subnet mask and the router's gateway address, yet, the Xbox can connect to the network (during diagnostics) and to the Internet, but can't connect to Xbox Live.

Have no idea how to get it connected - even tried ICS and used the pc's IP as the gateway, but no success.

Any idea?

you seem to know what you doing here conection wise (as the diagnostic seems to be picking up as fine) so lets try a simple solution first.
create a live acount on the xbox website, but create a uk or us one (reasons below) then try and log in to said live acount with the xbox.
if it conects try and play the file it should prompt you to download the requred file.

oh and the reason i said create a us or uk acount the media update doesnt work with the RSA acount

Also : This was my problem :) You must make sure in Windows (Especially Windows 7) that you have granted other devices the permission to the internet via the computer connection. (CAnt recall where the seeting is in Windows - Ill check later tonite if i have time - but its there soemwhere) Would be easier to connect xbox directly to router.


Windows 7 > Start menu > Network > Windows network and sharing centre > click on the connection > choose properties> and allow devices to connect to the internet via this connection. Apply and restart everything. Let the 360 connect and if gives error leave it and retry without restart in 10 min.
