How to extract MPEG2/AC3 streams from a DVD VOB files?

Is there a way to extract the MPEG2 and the audio stream from a DVD, provided it is not encrypted or protected in any way? I just want to extract the audio/video as is, without recompressing it. Is that possible? What is the difference between the VOB files and the normal MPEG files?
 
Check http://www.doom9.org.They have a bunch of guides and FAQs. They also have a very active forum. You're bound to get helped.

You might also try VobEdit. I use quite often with very good results.

The VOBs is basically just the video, audio and subtitle streams and chapter information multiplexed together.

Use Nero Recode.
Firstly rip it with recode to your harddrive into .vob files.Then open up recode again,import the vob file/s(or main movie) and save it to your harddrive as .mpg
 
ok I have the m2a and m2v streams separated

how do I make an MPEG from them now?

I tried to post to the doom9 forums but the bloody forums requires 5 days after you register before you are able to post! how dumb!

bbMPEG will allow you to multiplex the streams into a .mpg file.

And here's the bbMPEG Muxing Guide. It's geared towards VCD/SVCD but I've gotten it to work, just play around.

thanks, I was using the ddtools to extract the audio/video streams

now I downloaded the ddmpeg to combine them again, but there was severe audio problem

downloaded DVD decrypter and extracted the A/V streams from the DVD again, then combined them with ddmpeg, much better audio results but still slightly out of sync. I see that the AC3 track extracted by DVD Decrypter says in the name "delay -400ms", so I presume I have to set that to get it in sync, but the ddmpeg won't let me set negative values, grrrr

now I have two problems: getting the audio in sync, and combining the result (from multiple VOB files) into a single MPEG file
 
by the way the entire reason why I am going through this pain and agony is not because I am pirating DVDs, but because I bought this LG DVD recorder, and although the quality of the recording is perfect, I don't like much the editing functionality (for removing ads) and the menu structure generated by the recorder, so I want to rework the DVDs before burning them permanently, so I need a streamlined process in which I can get one MPEG for each track on a DVD recorder by the recorder. Once I have that, I have worked out the rest of the process.

So, let me get this straight. You recorded some shows and the LG DVD recorder created a DVD with the shows? Well, in that case, Nero Vision might actually be the easiest way to do it. You can also take a look at the DVD authoring guides on Doom9.org.
 
ok, anyone knows any program similar to VirtualDub but for MPEGs? I need to cut parts of an MPEG file and join multiple MPEG files, and all of this without recompressing the stream

cool thanks, I am downloading this now and will post later if that works well, hope it does

that's correct, I need to re-author the DVDs, where re-authoring means removing adverts (cutting parts) and creating new menu structure, but I want to avoid re-encoding the video at any cost, as the original quality is very good and I want to keep it as is if possible!
 
About the audio sync problem. There is a Program Stream Type setting on the Program Stream Settings tab of bbMPEG's MPEG Output Settings. That should be set to ~DVD. Also, there is a Startup Delay at the bottom. For -400 ms, you could set the Video to 400 and the Audio to 0.

BTW, -400 ms is a very large amount in my experience.

VirtualDub-MPEG2. Also download the AC3 ACM codec on the page.

thanks, yes this might work

it says that number in the name of the files extracrted by DVD Decrypter, so I am not sure where that number comes from and I don't see options in the DVD Decrypter for adjusting anything in that respect

I am downloading now the Nero one, it is a bit slow but in an hour or two I should have it, hope this works so I don't have to go through the pain of using dozens of separate programs

will post later on that

geeeez I was so excited when I saw this post of yours, but it seems that this virtualdub can open MPEG files, but you can't save MPEG files, only AVIs, so it won't work for my needs

thanks anyway, I will definitely use it if I need to convert from MPEG to AVI, VirtualDub is the best program ever for AVIs!

I read that forum that you posted, but no luck so far, this TyTool seem to be for TiVO only

Yes, but VDubMod includes a few mods to VDub.

You can actually use it with DVD sources, but it keeps crashing on my system.
 
I downloaded the Nero Vision but it is commercial :( I didn't notice that
