Getting myself a BB. MTN, Vodacom or Cell C and why.

Hi guys,

I'm getting myself a BB in the next week or two and was just wondering what people's experience is with the BIS and 3G is on each of the networks.

Browsing the forum it seems each one seems to have lots of complaints so it's tough to make a decision. At the moment I'm leaning towards MTN as they have a great special on at the moment for R279 a month incl BIS and 100 bucks airtime (i don't really call from my cell much, just want it for mail, mobile web stuff and social networks).

How has your experience been on the network you're currently on?

Don't get a BB. Get something with Android from Vodacom/MTN directly (for a lot less than R280) and register your simcard on FNB-Connect. Buy prepaid data via FNB-Connect for around 60c/meg (or less, if you have an FNB account, can use eBucks too) and never look back.

Android supports push mail just as good as a BB. Install WhatsApp if you want to BBM.

+1. Use a cheap data plan like FNB connect, Cell C or the new 8ta plan. I don't see why anyone would go BB if they see what an iPhone or good android phone can do.
 
NO!!!! Stay away from MTN!

I have 1 phone on Vodacom and 1 on MTN, both contracts and i can promise you that Vodacom is the better option here! Cant comment on Cell C, but between Vodacom and MTN i have received better service all round from Vodacom...

Thanks for the advice. One of the main reasons I'm going for BB rather than any of the others is that I hate touch screen keyboards. I like touch screen apps and navigation etc, but I really really hate typing on a touch keyboard. The Torch has the best of both for me. Touch navigation etc (albeit not as smooth or pretty as iPhone or android) and a physical keyboard that I can type on easily.

Also, I'm not really gaming or app mad. The iphone and Android apps are really cool, but not really what I'm interested in.

I would have said 'Vodacom' up until recently - now my opinion is a little bias against them. Try this, if you want to be more scientific and rational about it, log onto www.hellopeter.com. They have what is called 'League Tables' for the company with most complaints in ranking order. I think Vodacom is top of the log there but give it a look see. They even have a breakdown of what percentage of complaints were e.g. Call Center, Poor Service, Billing etc...it'll give you more information regarding who's the worste from that perspective from a larger sample than people on myBroadband who are willing to read and reply to this post.

Then I think that a phone is not what you should be looking at. There are bars that cater for that kind of requirement.

Well I just ordered my wifes PurpleBerry from VC for her upgrade this morning. R165pm for TopUp 135 including BIS. For her its worth it.

If you want a BB, get a BB and ignore what ever the others say, but if you want an Android, then don't get a BB!
 
Hmm, I would say MTN. But when my BB broke it took 7 weeks for them to fix it, but it is still faster than vodacom in my experience. Cell C is only EDGE (on BIS), so don't go there, unless I am missing something.
 
For 3G speed I rate MTN far higher. The BB speeds are excellent. After sales service probably Vodacom, so I guess you need to decide what is more important - user experience or after sales service *if it breaks*. BTW nashua have the 9780 for 299 incl BIS an 200 airtime.

Dude... MTN is the slowest 3G provider of ALL of them! I've had to call MTN at the end of each month to find out why my debit orders haven't gone off 5months out of the 11 that i've had the contract. I've really had alot of issues with billing!
 
It all depends what exactly is most important to you!

Im on mtn and regularly have network probs and speed probs too!

I would LOVE an iphone but love my BB too!

Truth is....you get what you expect. If you expect that you'll have billing drama then you'll get billing drama. If you expect piss-ass 3G speed than you'll get piss-ass 3G speed.

One recommendation though, if you go with Vodacom, insist on a data inhibitor. I don't know if Cell C and MTN have one but if they do then take it.
