Article: US lawmakers introduce bill that would legalize marijuana

US lawmakers on Thursday introduced a bill that would legalize marijuana nationwide but allow each state to regulate, tax and control the drug itself. They acknowledged, however, that the bill has virtually no chance of becoming law.

Coupled with how much would be saved not filling jails, arresting and prosecuting folk who smoke a joint.
 
The USA is a progressive country, we will follow suit. Julius Malema will be the first one to call for legalizing marijuana. Some small party in the Western Cape contested the local government elections and their biggest priority was to legalize marijuana. I want marijuana legalized in this country. Tax revenue is needed. Alcohol destroys a lot of people's lives but tax collection from alcohol sales are huge. Marijuana must be legalized as an alternative to nationalization of mi

Yes, economic freedom is a non-issue. Generating jobs, generating taxable revenues (and thus the deficit) is also a non-issue. Reducing the cost of various medications (by increasing competition from mj alternatives) is also a non-issue.

Think more please.

Not everyone is going to be stoned.

Think about the Dutch. Most of them do not smoke marijuana even though it is legal in their country...

And there will certainly be laws at work, like not smoking it on the job!

Legalising Marijuana in SA would bring more than taxes.

What about the economic benefit to the Eastern Cape.

Sorry, someone else mentioned him and I decided to respond.

Although I would argue that if we ever wanted to legalise marijuana here, regardless of what is right or common sense regarding marijuana, it will get passed or not based on perception. Perception of the masses can be swayed by Malema as much as we dislike him, so yes, I think him and other politicians and their opinions are relevant regardless if we like them or not.

1. It isn't a law that legalises marijuana. What the bill does it fixes the discrepencies that currently exist between state and federal law. 16 States have already legalised it yet it remains illegal at the federal level. All that this bill does is give clarity to who wins the argument. In the end, the bill wants it to be left to the states.

2. The only way you can make change is by getting people to talk about and not hiding it away. If no one ever speaks about it and it remains taboo, things won't change. If you want political change it cannot happen over a fortnight, introducing bills that get the attention on issues and highlight these things even if they don't pass are MASSIVE steps in the right direction.

I don't think you have a realistic approach to politics. Imagine a politician who only put his name down if he would win, what a coward. I'd rather have someone who stood for principles, regardless if he was unpopular with the rest of the old farts.
 
It would be better if the people that were selling weed were not the same people selling cocaine and heroin. That's the kinda people teenagers have to deal with to obtain their weed, sometimes the ones selling it will also rob and assault them to get money for their next fix, if they report the crime suddenly they in trouble so they keep quiet. That's also how they get introduced to hard drugs.
