Johannesburg - Police are fighting a war they did not declare, National Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele said during the funeral of police reservist Mark Ishlove, in Johannesburg, on Monday.

"We shall win this war. We shall not allow the country to be ruled by criminals," Cele told mourners during the service which was held at the Mosaiek Church in Fairland.

Cele assured the church filled with police that they were doing a "wonderful job" and reiterated no officer should die with a gun in their hand.

"Anybody who kills a member of the police is inviting trouble and courting sleepless nights," Cele said.

Sixty-year-old Ishlove, a lieutenant colonel, died in a shootout between the police and a five-man gang near a primary school in Northcliff on June 15. Two of the gunmen also died.

Police were chasing the gang's white Mercedes-Benz when it crashed.

The five men inside jumped out and ran away.

One of them dropped his pistol and was arrested near the accident scene. Another man was arrested further down the road and a third was caught in the school grounds.

Ishlove chased one of the other men to a house where a shoot-out ensued in which both he and the gunman died.

The fifth man tried to hide in a Wendy house. He shot himself in the head and died on the way to hospital.

Um, I hate to break it to him, but the criminals have been running this country for 17 years now.
 
As more & more arms-deal info becomes avaiable one gotto ask .. aren't they already?
 
Oh the irony! one of the country's biggest fraudsters in charge of its largest and quite often most violent group of thugs saying the country will not be ruled by criminals!
 
I must admit the policing in our area seems to have improved, comparing it to the shambles it was a year or so ago, but they still have a long way to go before they can claim they are winning the war on crime!
 
I stay in a very quiet town south of Durban and the crime in this area picked up terribly in the last 6 or so months. Multiple murders and house breakings.
I thought Jhb was terrible but unfortunately it just seems to be the same wherever you go in this country. What will actually change the way we tackle crime?
YAY ...he says we shall not allow this country to be ruled by criminals. OK? great statement....can you give us some details on how you gonna back that up?
If another 500 policeman died this month we would just hear the same words over and over again. what about action...or details about what will happen.

I have never been one to panic over safety or worry about criminals and stuff , but lately I am terrified some tosser is just going to stroll in and hurt someone for a tv or something petty.

Would the majority here say things were better under Selebi's rule or Cele's?
 
He should have just said a few words and then sat down rather than using it as a platform to talk to the media:mad:

This has now totally overshadowed an event meant to be a solemn good bye to a good person who died doing what he believed in

What is the meaning of "In The Line Of Duty"
It means that an officer made the Ultimate sacrifice.
It means that someone took an officer's life.
A hero has fallen.

Officers who gave their all
To protect and serve
Have been killed by someone whom they swore
To protect and serve.

It means that their badge will no longer be on their chest
And they will join
"The Best Of The Best"

It means that family and friends are left behind
To deal with the lost of a loved one.
Only having the memories of that loved one
Close to their hearts.
Something no one can ever take away.

It means that family members will stand at the officers grave
And wonder why ...
Why would someone take an officer's life
And leave them there to die?
If we only knew.

Today an officer will place their badge on their chest
To fulfill the dreams of heroes killed

Being a policeman in SA in this day and age is very hard.

The same can be said for being a paramedic in this day and age.

We don't understand it (for Police/Paramedics) unless you ARE in the police force / EMS service.

Does anybody remember a show by the same name? A crew followed some police around to various crime scenes etc, it was extremely graphic but did portray the realities that the police go through.
