No I'd like to see SA's government doing the same.
 
Nitel prolly realised they were going to be raped by Telkom. Common sense prevails.

Knowing the Nigerians, if Telkom did get in there, they would come to SA and sell bandwidth on the street corners .....
 
Its easier and cheaper to get what the Nigerians are selling on the street corners than it is to get broadband in SA, they must be onto something.

I am sure I read on these forums a few months ago about how the SAT3 issue was going to be removed from the deal and kept in state control because of it being a national asset and to avoid monopolistic SOB's from screwing up the market.
At least some people in power on this continent have some vision.

Barely four days to the opening of financial bids for the sale of the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), the federal government has revealed that NITEL will be should without the International Submarine Cable (SAT3).

A statement from the ministry of communications said that the decision of the federal government not to sell NITEL along with the SAT3 cable derived from the fact that the cable is a key asset in the communications industry.

Basically, avoid creating a Telkom deadly plague on Nigerian soil, they can obviously see what has happened here and want to avoid that at all costs.

If I remember correctly, I've read about ex-Zim farmers being offered a home and land in Nigeria.
Can't fault Obasanjo on these issues... (unlike some others)
 
Yeah, Nigeria and Mosambique are turning into the African countries with the most promise.

Nigeria's got the 3rd largest movie industry in the world, after Holly- and Bollywood, just for interests' sake.
 
A victory for the Nigerian people. They are much better off without a company such as telkom running their government and economy.
