USB / Lamp Power via Telephone Jack

Hi there,

This is my first post here although I am an avid reader of posts!

I am in the process of project whereby sourcing power for a (at first) lamp and with some consideration USB power from a telephone jack.
I have done this before in the US and an example can be seen here


I want to make the same setup here but need some guidence:

1: What voltage runs through the standard Telkom wall port ? (I use this for ADSL but that does not change the voltage) :confused:

2: Where can I source the required parts:confused:? As seen in the video link (how I miss Radioshack:love:)

The standard output on a USB port is 5 volts, thus I should be able to charge anything via USB if I can build this setup correctly.

You didn't mention which city, but you can also try Electrocomp for components., the have branches in Jhb, Cape Town and Durban. Half the price of RS Components.

@OP Don't forget to add a liberal amount of primary surge protection components too:

line > gas discharge tubes > inductance/resistance > transorbs > equipment, with a big fat earth return path :)

Why not just an optical isolator?
 
This is a neat idea, so basically you continue to have lights even when the power goes out? I suppose you could hook some LED`s onto it?
 
Realistically you can only draw a limited amount of current from the line before its detected as off-hook state, 20mA or so IIRC, so its very limited, but that said you can knock up some useful odds and ends if the heart desires. Lighting up your home...... don't know, hey.

Charging USB devices from an on hook line without causing the off-hook condition? Interesting. Please post your results.
 
Please explain how you would draw power through that?

Thought the telephone line was only meant to trigger a light, i.e. for hearing-disabled persons... not to actually power lamps.

Telkom does however check whether you're drawing too much current, and then assumes there is a short on the line, and then disables it though.
 
The disabled persons light is driven by the phone circuitry when the ring voltage is detected on the line.
