this is my 3rd laptop, I had HP P4 2.53 ghz, Dell 2.8,
Acer AMD 3000+ , Don't think for a second that such a high spec laptop will eat up a similar spec PC. I would even go as far as saying a R5000 pc (built yourself) will outperform a R18 000 laptop. At first I though maybe it is the make of the laptop, next I though pentium is the problem, so I went AMD, but I know now wht is the problem , HEAT. such powerful processors generate up to 80 degrees of heat, which will either slow down the laptop or even shut it down.

So the next time I'll buy a laptop I'll rather go for a less powerful laptop (yeah word and excel dont need 3.6 ghz and 2 gig ram) maybe the centrino is the best option at this time of perhaps the AMD turion .

Advantages of Desktops over laptops:
Lower heat,easier heat dissipation
Faster CPUs
Better graphics cards(Higher voltage tolerance,higher potential memory and Core clock speeds)
Faster hard drives
Multi monitor support
Less money for more performance
Harder to damage
More upgrades available
Not dependant on battery life
Huge overclockability in comparison
Active cooling ie Fans

In ending,a desktop will perform significantly better than a laptop with the "mobile" version of any hardware.

Heres my say on the matter.

If you want a Laptop that can compete with a PC your going to have to pay for it. I can understand wanting more space, but there are other options - External HDD would be the best and far cheaper option. (but then you do have to carry it around with you.)

More RAM if you already have 512Mb, just add another 512Mb stick in. Far cheaper than buying 1 1Gb stick.

If you find that HDD is slow, it might be a cheap 4200RPm or 5200RPm drive. I would think of buying a smaller more cost effective 7200RPm moblie drive.

Yep, ATM the Centrino is the best option IMO. And you shouldn't think that the Pentium M isn't a bad proccesor. I think PC Format has once even said that the Pentium M is the best gaming proccesor ever! And in many cases its been proven that the Pentium M kicks major ASS! ;)

Say you have a 1.8 ghz mobile chip and you overclock it to the max,the most you would get is around 2.5,without literally burning you laptop and house down,now coupled with that you would blow the PSU which is only around 100 watts in the first place,desktop chips could potentially goto around 4ghz(fx55 world record) and around 7ghz(intel) both being 3d benchmark stable,all of this with infinite upgradibility from a plethera of commercially available parts,on top of this the only way to get an aftermarket cooler for a laptop CPU is too custom build it,tough job.
Yes I understand not everyone Overclocks their Hardware,but you understand now that statement is fundamentally flawed.

How much does a laptop with integrated GFX go for? 10k,15k?lol
That M170 which ships with a go 6800 ultra has lower scores than my vanilla 6800 lol
Glad intel learned something from AMD about pipeline architecture ey?
 
Ok,those benches are with a GT not an Ultra,you do know that GT is lower than Ultra right?
You paid 10k for a computer with a 9700 lol
My Vanilla ie plain:4 disabled pipelines ie cheaper 6800 beats it straight in both 3d mark 05 and o3 benchmarks.

My question is:

You have a decent PC, what the hell are you going to do on your laptop, that you need such a powerful one?

IMO buy a 7 - 10 grand laptop and spend the rest on your PC... you get a hell of a lot more bang for your buck.

I always thought that Centrino and Pentium M we're inherently the same architecture? I could be wrong I suppose.

My scores are better than that,fact.Yes everything in my rig is OC'd when I bench,and my GFX card is OC'd to 435/900 24/7.
So whats the problem?

We Import products from REMOVE PTY .LTD the people that make and market Alienware. We have a set amount we pay per import dependent on that total amount of the shipment. It would take 2 to 3 weeks for the products to arrive. And if you can find it for sale we'll track it down for you.
