Population > 9 yrs old 36793100
Vodacom 17500000
MTN 8400000
Cell-C 2500000
Total 28400000
Market Penetration 77.19%
If you exclude people 10-14, this increases to 89.6%.
Or are they counting those old Nokia 6110s I have in the back of a drawer somewhere, unused for ages?

The market penetration of mobile phones in SA is nothing short of remarkable.
Mightn't business customer also be counted as subscribers here? If so then you should add the number of active businesses to the potential 'population'.jabulani said:How do they count subscribers? This looks very fishy to me.

I think the numbers also include e.g. tourists who've gotten phones temporarily while in SA. (I seem to recall seeing somewhere recently that they regard a subscriber as active if they have used the network in the last three months ... or was it six?)
