I don't know if there is another thread about this topic so I will just add another.

October I got two new Nokia 6680s from Autopage (MTN). I chose the phone type for 2 reasons (1) 3G data and as a spinoff (2) video calling.

When I received my cell phone (first) the sales guy at Autopage informed me that I need a new 3G SIM card to be able to transfer 3G data. Asked him how much and he replied R140 for the card. So I paid him. It took about 48 hours to activate this new 3G SIM card but I noticed on several occations that my signal would switch over to 3G and that my data would be noticably faster (old Noah's ark 1996 16K SIM installed).

Then I got my wife's cell phone. I immediately asked for another 3G SIM but they didn't have any stock. It took about 30 days for them to track a 3G SIM. They called my wife to come and pick it up. By that time they have lost the paper work stating that the SIM card is a replacement. So they decided to set it up as a 2nd TwinCall SIM. Friggen geniusses !! :-(

The problem is now that the TwinCall SIM is a 3G SIM and if she calls someone or SMSs them another number appears on the other handset. Even worse is that if you permanently use the 2nd SIM you cannot receive SMSs on the old number. So for many reasons we have decided not to even use the 2nd SIM (it is still in the original card in an envelope).

This month we receive a statement for telephony on the 2nd SIM number, which sucks because her phone is on Procall120 and she was within her limit.

WHAT REALLY GOT TO ME was the fact that we tried 3G video calling a few days ago with her old (2000 model) SIM still installed. Did all the service centre setups and guess what? It works. We are doing the 3G video calling thing with only one 3G SIM in the loop.

So it seems that Autopage swindled me in exchanging my old working SIMs for 3G models (R280 ) and screwed up the billing (R90+) and now the one genius over there (Centurion Autopage- avoid them like the plague) told me it is IMPOSSIBLE to make the new 3G SIM card the primary number. What it comes down to is to fork out another R140 for another 3G SIM to replace the old one. All in all I could most probably do 3G data and video without spending a cent.

Can someone please tell me if this 3G SIM is required for 3G data and video? And secondly, if so, why my wife's phone works like a charm with the old SIM?

Lastly are there any other disgruntled Autopage clients out there? Would be nice to know if we can take the to court together. In the USA they have a 'class action suit' thing. Maybe there is something similar here in SA?

And yes I have called them, went to see them... I could solve all my problems by spending some more money, of course.

I'm on Vodacom and I've been using 3G data (3g phone connected via bluetooth to notebook) and making lots of video calls since I got my 3G phone in April 2005 and I'm still using my 16k sim card that i received in 1999. I havn't had any problems with my old sim card. My 3G downloads go at about 35k/sec which is about the maximum speed that vodacom advertise.

You were *so* swindled.

Technically, you don't need a 3G card to achieve 3G connections (some service providers force you to, though - I've heard of a provider in the UK that requires it). On MTN you certainly don't. We made a quick impromptu video call (my first!) between two non 3g sims (one is positively ancient, the other about a year old) just before new year.

The Twincall sim issue is actually quite important to get sorted out. What it sounds like is that some brain surgeon at MTN managed to assign the wrong (i.e. someone elses) phone number to your 2nd sim (forgive me if I forget the snappy abbreviations - it's been awhile).
A similar thing happened to me when I picked up my new JasJar - was given the wrong sim. Several wrongly implemented simswaps later, useless "support" from countless faceless drones at 808 and an unusable number for over a month (*fully* billed, of course) later, and I've only just managed to get it sorted out.

to my knowledge the only requirement is HSCSD to be activated on the line.
use it dont use it......

The manual of the 6680 states that you need a USIM card (64k sim) to make a video call  . This is clearly not the case. Just who can you trust?

6680

Nokia are probably just covering themselves against legal challenge as they need to have a single manual covering any oneof the hundreds of operators (with particular business rules) worldwide.

Hi everyone

My family own a Autopage Branch, and with the knowledge that I have, I can say you do NOT NEED a 64K Sim Card for 3G to work.

Autopage Centurion indeed did get you to pay them some extra bucks for no reason. I am sorry that you had to have such a experience with them.

I also use a Nokia 6680 and what Insider has said above is true. The device is known to work more smoothly with the 64K SimCard, but its not NEEDED.

I use my old 32k sim to make video calls, my 64k sim to use my video voicemail box and my 128k sim as a TV sim, different uses per sim as that is what they are capable of. Its always best to upgrade to the latest simcard in order to utilize the best features of what the network has to offer.

I use my 29c sim just as well as my R140.00 3G contract sim on skype and googletalk. No Latency problems.

Jeezuz - can't believe I read this ENTIRE thread before getting to your line. TWO THOUSAND AND SIX... FTL!

LoL :D

I read through the OP and when I got the part of R140 for a 3G sim, I opted to look at the date - cos it didn't seem right to be paying that much for old kuk like that now :D

All you guys are "suiping" Can't make head or tail of 2006 FTL???

Go to bed now.

Snake, your reception is bad. You are breaking up.

I have a 16k "MTN the better connection" sim card. Remeber those. It works 100% with 3G/HSDPA and I can make video calls. So I'm not sure what the problem was.
